bike at Olifants?

Unread postby 1wnature » Thu Mar 31, 2011 3:32 pm

Hi Guys,
Were going to be staying at Mopani in July and I was wandering if you can go mountain biking at Olifants.

What time does the afternoon ride begin and end?

Anyone know the route taken on the afternoon ride?

Are there any other camps that have Mountain Biking?

Any info would be great!

Here is the reply from Sanparks:

"Yes the mountain biking is still available at Olifant. The prices are as followed; Morning Bike is R480.00 p/p and afternoon bike is R265.00 p/p
It wont be possible to do the mountain bike if you are staying at Mopani as they start the activities very early as 05H30 and Mopane is very far."

Morning walk or mountain bike?

Unread postby Graham_5000 » Tue May 22, 2012 11:57 pm

Help! What shall we do on our first whole day in Kruger (apart from driving!)?

Want to do one activity and can't decide whether morning walk, morning cycle or afternoon cycle would be the most rewarding in mid August at Olifants camp? Being incredibly indecisive unusually hence the call for inspiration!

Olifants Mountain Bike trail

Unread postby Pinarelloman » Tue Jul 10, 2012 1:34 am

Has anyone done the Olifants mountain bike ride. I am assuming it requires a minimum number of 4-6 people and is guided. Is it a worthwhile change from driving around looking for animals? Is there a required fitness level?
Any advice appreciated.

Mountain Biking in Kruger

Quick question for the biking enthusiasts - can you do the Olifants mtb trails when you stay at Letaba? In other words, can you drive from Letaba to Olifants in the morning and still be in time for the morning ride?

Dear EddieL

Please note that due to gate closing times you will not be able to make it at Olifants if you book at Letaba. Most of our morning activities take place before gate opening time while afternoon activities take place towards gate closing time.

Mountain Bike Trails allows guests to explore Kruger's environment by means of a mountain bike. This activity allows for a minimum of 2 and maximum of 6 people per trail. Full Day Trails are also available only for very fit experienced cyclists. No person under the age of 16 years are permitted on these trails.

Are they actually doing the rides now ?

Kellyee21 the bikes are fine and fully operational.

Stephens, I e-mailed Lerato (manager at Olifants) with a few questions. According to her, the minimum number of participants is 6 and not 2 (where do you find 6 biking enthusiasts on any given time?!). Furthermore, she has not replied to my further queries, e.g. if I can use my own cycle (after various attempts to contact her).

The mountain biking activity is advertised on posters all over the KNP, but it does not seem to be well organized at all. Nobody seems to have the knowledge to properly answer tourists' queries. If a visitor is keen on riding the trails at Olifants, how can he/she plan a trip? Accommodation bookings need to be made well in advance.

Hi Stephens. I have tried to contact Olifants on my recent visit to the park, but was unable to get any information. I have also posted to various forums on the matter, without success. The information given in the link you posted, seems to be outdated. It really is a pity, because this can become a fantastic tourist attraction (as it is in Botswana), but at the moment proper information on the mountain bike trails makes it impossible to plan ahead. Information such as the following is unclear: I believe there are morning and afternoon outings? If so, can you drive from other camps like Letaba or Satara and still make the gates? How many routes are available and can they all be done in one day? What is the maximum number of participants - still 6?

I also read an article that the mountain biking activity will possibly be extended to Skukuza. Any feedback on this?
