We were there last weekend. Driving up towards Mopani, around the Letaba area we saw chameleon, some buffalo, number of eagles, hyena and plenty of elephant. And then driving around the camp area we saw some hyena, buffalo, elephant and of course plenty of hippo, waterbuck, impala and crocodile and the rest of the "locals". Sorry, I don't have the road names with me at the moment.
Then from camp we saw various owls, storks, elephants, waterbuck, hippo, bushbuck, a lovely water monitor digging a hole near the fence and plenty of kingfishers.

Will post a full report sometime soon though :D

Must say the photography was difficult with the weather and the long grass when driving, but I tried my best :hmz:

We had the unusual sighting of a large branch crashing down off the big tree right in front of the restaurant while there last month.
Thankfully no one was sitting on the bench at the time.

We were there in Feb and had an amazing leopard sighting on the S94 in the middle of the road, just in front of the camping section of Letaba. We were the only car on the road and were able to sit with the leopard for about 15 mins before he moved off. The bush was so thick you couldn't even see the camp fence on the right hand side if the road and it was only about 5 meters from the road.

Other than that game was sparse other than a very large, calm tusker on the H1-6 along the river section just before the S95, what a privilege!! It made it all worth it!

That must have been awesome K-4S.

Unfortunately Letaba has never been a excellent sightings area for us as yet, I guess the general rule of being at the right place at the right time counts.

Very true yoda, but the occasional Lion or Leopard would also be very nice for a change.

Has anyone had much luck on the sand roads between Letaba and Olifants? (s93, s46, s94, s44). We were travelling on them and it seems like good game country but our sightings were poor. Haven't really spent much time in the area. :cam:

We saw 4/5 of the big five (no lions :( ) and plenty of the usual zebra, elephants, buffalos, impalas (of course), wildebeest etc.. We were also lucky enough to see a few leopards and cheetah. We saw a lot of spotted hyenas.

If you're interested in birding, there are quite a few lovely birding opportunities there.

Pytilia,
Sounds like it was a productive route for you.
I find the stretch between Olifants and Letaba to be generally quiet.

Yoda,

The road between Olifants and Letaba was quite most of the time, just shows that in the bush you have to be in the right place at the right time..
But I must say, the roads from Letaba to Mopani were always promising and I saw many good sightings around that area. The road to Phalaborwa gate would also usually have game and quite a few raptors.

We arrive at Letaba on Nov 9, 2014 and bright and early the next morning we travel north to Mopani without much luck.
