Hesitant to buying International Wild Card online...

Unread postby BrooklynBirder » Thu May 19, 2011 6:30 am

I was about to buy my (first, not renewal) Wild Card online when I decided to look at this forum first...wow, I had no idea about all the problems. We will be traveling in August and now I'm confused as to what to do, will I receive my card in time (I'm reading about people waiting since November!!)

I really don't want to have to waste time on our trip buying a card on-site; not even sure if we'd be able to buy it in our first locations (our first stops will be in the Cape Town area, then West Coast National Park, Namaqualand, Augrabies, Kgalagadi...) We definitely will need one. But I certainly don't want to buy one and then never receive it.

What to do??

Hey BrooklynBirder,
I bought a family card a month ago and don't think I'll receive the card in time either. Nevertheless it is not a waste to buy it, as you will receive a Wild Card confirmation letter which is sufficient.
As Joep wrote, just show the confirmation letter, passport and your booking and everything will be fine.

hmm, well I sent an inquiry to sanparks and they said the opposite:
>>Dear Sir/Madam

Hi,

I think is better to you to buy it on arrival and you can get the card same time.<<

However, if the confirmation letter is sufficient then I think I'd rather do it in advance and not waste time with paperwork when I'd rather be birding!

We registered on arrival and it took 5 mins.
Just have your passport handy for the details, and they need your address, phone number etc!!
It was so simple and hassle free.

Up to you of course, but I have read on another thread that apparently there are still problems with people buying new cards/updating widcard details, and then a few months later the details are incorrect.

Have a good trip

are Wild Cards sold at EVERY entrance point? Because the first park we will be visiting will likely be Boulders.

BrooklynBirder,

I might have to follow Val's advice too for our next visit to KTP in Nov. My card expires in Sept (still the old one) and at this rate I might not receive my New Wild card or it will be posted to Louis Trichardt instead of Trichardt. Only 4 months left to make it a year of waiting for a card.

By the way I am still waiting for my authorisation number to check my details for 2 days now.

Boulders is a small beach and maybe not, but surely you will be able to get it at Cape of Good Hope (Cape Point) that falls under Table Mountain Nat Park. It is not too far from Boulders and if it is your first visit to Cape Town defnitely worthwhile to visit. You won't be able to see two oceans, but what the heck it is just amazing to see the southern point.

No Dave just the confirmation letter, but we paid for a card in December, and was issued with the letter. WE had to update details online after, but no probs there either (even for me and I'm a bit of a techniphobe!!)We used the confirmation letter in March for the cricket weekend, and also at various KZN smaller parks. Absolutely no probs, it was always accepted.
I asked in Kruger what happens if my card doesn't arrrive in the post, and I was told the letter is as good as the card and will always be honoured!!
Hope that helps.

We renewed ours online in December and updated our details, got the document which we used in December and March. With all the fuss about incorrect details I got an authorisation code yesterday and checked my details. I showed only our post code. I have updated again and got a new letter |(basically the same as the other. However I am concerned that my details will be lost again. But we do get the Wild magazine to our post box.
I am confused. Jan doesn't think we will ever get a card before we have to renew in December.

Don't worry, there always is a little paperwork, and it's Africa! The gate is where you leave behind the rush, stress, and all those kinds of things.
You can buy the Wildcard at the gate, that gives you the time to think if you have moved all the photographic gear to the proper places, have you got it to the right settings? And you can enquire what what seen where!
If you really don't want to you can also buy it at reception of the camp you are in.
I would simply buy it there, not online.
Arriving currently: The photos from our trip! Overhere! :yaya:

Feel free to use any of these additional letters to correct the spelling of words found in the above post: a-e-t-n-d-i-o-s-m-l-u-y-h-c

We will visit Table Mtn for sure, but we will first visit Boulder's Beach because that is where we are staying. So that will surely be our first stop, and I don't want to have to pay for it seperately if it would be covered by the Wild Card.

I'm sure one of the mods can find out for you whether Boulders can register you for a wild card??
