Wild Cards and Cape Parks

Unread postby Tiki » Sun Mar 22, 2009 3:09 am

I wasn't orginally going to buy a wild card as we have only 2 nights in Kruger and 2 in Kgalagadi, cheaper to just pay at the entrance. I came across something on another site that suggests we can use them to get into Table Mountain including the cable car and get into Boulders Beach to see the penguins. Is this true?

Where do we buy the Wild Card in Cape Town? We are staying near the V&A Waterfront and the first SANPark we would visit is Table Mountain, do they sell them at the entrance?

Tiki, your WildCard is good for entrance to Table Mountain NP, but NOT for the cable car, which is a separate, commercial, operation. However, the WildCard does give you entrance to both Cape Point part of TMNP (a favourite of mine, the point itself being the least interesting part!) and to Boulders for the penguins. I'd suggest that you work out the individual entrance fees for those parks you will be visiting, to decide whether the WildCard is for you.

You can purchase the WildCard at the Visitor Info Centre. There is one in the city centre, where I know you can buy the card, and also one in the V&A Waterfront, where I think you can get it, but not 100% sure as I purchased mine in town.

HTH. Have a great trip!

I support what arks has told you. The TM cable car fee is DEFINITELY NOT covered by wild card. If you buy it, remember it is the ALL clusters one.

Just a note that international visitors only have the option of buying an all clusters card, no other options! The regional cluster cards are only for SA citizens (and perhaps also SA residents, I'm not 100% sure on that).

If you look in the green bar to the left under tariffs you can get all the information about tariffs, including the conservation fees which are covered by the Wild Crad, and also all the information you'll need about the Wild Crad and how to apply or where to get it!

Actually, it looks like the Wild Card gives a discount on the cable car. So it looks like the Wild Card is the way to go to cover Table Mountain, Boulder's Beach, Kgalagadi and Kruger.

That is excellent news about the WildCard discount for the cableway  I had asked about a discount quite some time ago, but had no idea that it is now being offered. Thanks for posting all the details, Tiki! One word of warning: be sure to check that the cablecar is running before you head for the cableway as winds and cloud on the mountain often affect operations.

Have a great trip!

It would be Good Friday. We have Robben Island booked in the morning, then probably lunch at V&A (hope something is open) then over to Table Mountain. I am just worried now about where to get the Wild Card given that we arrive at 1730 on Thursday, could probably get to the hotel by 1900 (Arabella Westin) and then have hopefully 2 hours to get everything we need-Wild Card, Exclusive Books for the birding guide, snacks and drinks, etc as I don't want to count on anything being open on Good Friday.

I've been in Cape Town on Good Friday and from what I remember, most shops, etc, are open — at least in the morning. You should be able to get your WildCard at the visitor info centre, I know that the one in the city bowl was open on Good Friday in 2006, so I'd assume that the one in the waterfront would be . However, perhaps you should email the SANParks office in Cape Town to check? It would be a shame for you to get there and not be able to purchase your WildCard!

Good news Tiki,

Please give it a test drive & let us know. This is a change in attitude. As a tour guide, I get in a lot of places free, but the cableway I have had to pay full price until now.

Update, we are in Cape Town right now. You can buy Wild Cards at V&A Waterfront tourist office but their machine was down so they sent us to the main mall where the Pick & Pay is to a store called Cape Storm where we bought the Wild Card with no problems and they take all credit cards.

We did get the discount I mentioned above on the cable cars.

Off to Boulder Beach today, not sure about Cape Point as I heard there is some kind of marathon and some roads will be closed.

Internationally renowned 2 Oceans Marathon is run on easter Saturday, around the peninsula. I ran 4 in the 80s.
