24 Hours in Kruger

Dewdrops melt in the morning light
Sunshine seeps through the leaves
like syrup dripping onto bread
Kruger is awake and what a sight!

The old matriarch leads the way
She extends her trunk in anticipation
of a mudbath
The herd follows, eager to play

The dusty track shows many spoor
The animals head to the river
to quench their thirsts
All aware of its magic allure

Storm clouds gather over the hill
The raindrops fall onto parched
Ground clearing the air
Kruger at dusk, beautifully still.

The leopard leaps from the tree
The impala moves along the path
unaware of its fate
The cat suffocates the buck silently

Seconds pass then the buck lies still
The predator hears the call of
impending danger
Up the tree she drags her kill

In the fork she lays her prize
The laughing hyenas stare up at her,
their jaws agape
The air is filled with vulture cries

The spotted cat begins to devour
She ignores the distant growls
of the lion pride
Feasting until the midnight hour

Large bright eyes and sharp beak
The owl sees the field mouse
scurrying in the undergrowth
Now begins the game of hide and seek

The den is filled with rays of sun
The meerkat watches from the
tall termite mound
Danger will see him on the run

Kruger is a wilderness supreme
Home to a diverse range
of animals and birds
For me the perfect place to dream
