In the last light of the day, silhouettes of thorn trees dot the picturesque landscape of Mokala National Park. As the chill sets in, birds settle down for the long night ahead, whilst a Jackals call, echoes across the moonlit valley. A shuffling Aardvark emerges from the rustling grass to drink at a small waterhole, under the darkness of an Umbrella Tree. Flickering stars begin to surface in their thousands, blanketing the nights` sky in a kaleidoscope of patterns. Disappearing into a sea of grass, gently swaying to the rhythm of a gustily breeze, the content aardvark retreats from the waterhole.
A harsh, shrill call, sounds from the bushes at the base of a towering koppie. Seconds later the sound is repeated, only from a different spot. The Mountain Reedbuck moving cautiously through the dense foliage, try to remain undetected by the danger which lurks unseen. On approaching for a closer encounter, the secretive creatures set flight into the darkness, leaping over shrubs and termite mounds, bound for safety.
All turns silent once more, with only the occasional swift of wind through the grass, to dampen the vast stillness, which has once more settled over the sleepy landscape.
As hours pass, the moon glides up into the unbridled sky, softening the land in hues of blue and grey. In the shadow of an aged Camel thorn tree, a shy duiker creeps through the undergrowth. Embarking on a night of foraging and exploration, the lonely duiker disappears over an embankment into a network of narrow dongas.
Across the valleys and through the koppies, a world of hidden creatures move silently through the darkness. Up in the sky, the hemisphere is lit by a shooting star, plummeting across the galaxy into the horizon.
Here, in the stillness of the night, time stands still, and for just a minute, you lose your imagination to the beauty and splendour of the nature in which we live.
Come and experience this beauty and splendour at Mokala National Park
