Praise Song for Walter Sisulu

(Inspired by a trip to Letaba)

The full Moon, bland and expressionless, rises through the gaps in the trees.
But passing among the open frames of twigs and branches
The Moon matures
And furrowed frowns appear as it ascends.
The last night, before tomorrow.

Dawn rose, and I saw you, Tata Mkhulu
Alone in a clearing, the others in the shadows.
You stood alone, not because you were alone
But this day you stood alone, to say goodbye.

Your face, unlike the virgin Moon is carved with ninety years of life.
Old, even for an elephant.
Have you forgotten?
You must have. I see no hatred there.
Just the after-ache of quiet wisdom and benign peace.

Twenty-six years, and twenty-six grandchildren
Balancing sacrifice and blessing.
May the blessings justify the sacrifice, and pick up the Spear, and hold it high.

Blameless, selfless
Leader and Friend
Rest well within the cradle of our prayers.
