Clearing of Lantana Camara from Malalane area of KNP

Between the 02 and 04 May 2008 a work-party of Honorary Rangers (HRs) was put together to clear Lantana Camara in the Malalane area of the KNP.

Don English, the Section Ranger of Malalane section allocated the 11 members of the Lowveld HR's and one member from Highveld an area to clear.

               The "Hackers"

Lantana was cleared from a tributary leading to the Crocodile River, the Malalane Main Gate and outside Berg en Dal Camp, using the cut stump method.

The “Hackers”, as they chose to call themselves, removed 590 adult Lantana plants in the 3 days. It was hard work, with cuts, falls, steep mountains, rocks and long grass to get around, but, as the group said, “ Africa is not for sissies”. Despite these difficulties, all the “Hackers” enjoyed the work and the weekend. This excursion was but a beginning, and more of these projects are planned with the hope that we can make a difference to the Southern and Western Boundary of the KNP.

If any members of the HRs would like to get involved in these work parties please contact Grant Coleman via email at leslcoleman@gmail.com or contact your regional AITG Representative to contact the AITG to find out any future work parties in the KNP.
