poe8: meerkatte

the happy campers
are not immediately obvious,
but after a scouting, emerging head,
the whole family horde comes up for a look.

like holidaying soldiers enjoying the sun,
they line up, sniffing the air,
then hurry about their business,
playing all the way.

dappled drunkards,
there is nothing quite as wonderful
as ten minutes of light and warmth,
then scurrying back inside,
mysteriously underground for a second,
then up and away again.

we could learn from the earnest playfulness
of these organised rodents,
putting up the tent, fetching water for tea,
saying hello to the neighbours,
all done in a seriously meaningful
spirit of fun.
