poe7: hippopotami

lolling lovely in the pool,
they seem to be having such fun,
beer-boeps bouncing happily
as they relax around the rugbygame telly.

their laughter and grunting comments
echo around the clifftops
of the neighbourhood braais,
challenging blitzvinnig and smokey robinson
in an extended invitation
to all likeminded brothers.

one yawns widely,
another winks at me
as I watch, waiting in my hide.

who knows what coarse boorishness
my digital camera will reveal
back home with my darkroom programs.

barbarians of another order,
these wild beings seem so tame
as my eye roves around
this ancestral watering-hole,
on an ancient, playful rite of passage.
