poe34:A Night under the Kgalagadi Sky

As the blood stained
Desert sands
Flow across the lands
Wearing patches
Of grass stubble
Here and there
And the scars
Left by dry riverbeds
The Kalahari lions
Hunt tonight
Hidden in the shadow
Of camel thorn trees
Eyes glowing in the dark
Under the bright
Full moon
As the spirits
Of the ancients
Ride the night breeze
Overhead timeless stars
Paint stories in the sky
Of Khoisan myths
And heritage forgotten
The cunning laugh
Of the hyenas
Sounds in the air
And voices from the past
Breath through images
Imprinted on rocks
In this desolate escape
Of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
At my campsite fire
The wood comes to life
As it dances under the flames
Sucking the oxygen
That feeds it
Then spitting out sparks
Exhaling a light grey smoke
The silence echoes
And its tranquility
Soothes my soul
Giving me peace of mind
And renewing me
