There are some animals round here
Of which one should always beware.
They are magnificent to view –
Unfortunate to say, it’s true
They’re also sometimes very hungry,
Prone to eat just all and sundry.
And then there are the gentler sort
Who munch on all that’s green – no thought
To chase, consume or to devour
Ought else but leaves, grass, the odd flower.
The lion’s king and he can roar
(He and his wives and cubs galore) -
An awesome and impressive sound,
Reverberating all around.
The buffalo’s a decent dude,
But please don’t threaten or be rude.
Don’t injure him or make him cross -
You do not want a furious
Few tons of angry ous who knows
You should not mess with buffaloes.
A leopard is a beauteous beast,
But of the five you’ll see her least
For she prefers the cool of night
To hunt or travel, so a sight
Of her magnificence is rare -
But, should you catch a glimpse, you’ll stare -
Her striking coat has lots and lots
Of deepest black, big beauty-spots.
How curious a rhinoceros –
So solid, looking prosperous.
The white eats grass, the black eats trees,
The baby reaches to mum’s knees.
Despite them seeming rather placid
You do not want to make one acid.
Their tantrums are tumultuous –
Beware a cross rhinoceros!
Loxodonta Africana
Giants of this panorama.
Elephants are civilized,
No great threat despite their size.
Babies they protect and teach -
How to swim and how to reach
Tasty food with clever trunk.
(Maroela berries make them drunk!)
So here you have the famed big five.
The National Parks are where they thrive,
As well as other parks like these -
Where they can live just as they please.
