poe11:Letaba Indaba

Welcome, welcome
To restcamp Letaba
Where all animals gather
For their Kruger Indaba.

Delegates pour in
From all over the Park;
They greet with a grunt,
They trumpet and bark.

Even the Nile crocodile,
Looking fierce for a while,
Bares all his teeth
In a smile wide a mile.

The last to fly in,
from the woods of Pafuri,
Is, breathtaking to watch,
The blue-crested lourie.

No sign yet of any baboon,
Only an SMS, short and sweet:
“There’s a feast up my street,
But I’ll see you soon.”

In the Chair is the Sable
From the southern border,
He hammers the table
And calls them to order.

The Scripture is read
By a greying old leopard;
From Psalm 23:
The Lord is my shepherd

Business includes
A complaint from King Lion:
Not enough time here
To dine and to wine.

Poor buffalo has a serious woe:
“Why should an animal die
for the simple sake
of a mere buffalo pie?

Striped zebra whines crossly:
“Kwa-ha! Kwa-ha! Wait, mate,
The stripes at a crossing
Should never be straight.

Mighty elephant is blunt:
“On my way to Letaba
I trampled two poachers
On an illicit elephant hunt.”

Battle tank rhino jumps up
In excited approval:
“Please, let’s all endorse
The poachers’ removal.”

Then a motion is moved:
“Let’s also stay cool”,
Which is loudly approved
From the hippopotamus pool.

The debate that ensues
Is intense but it’s short;
Finally elephant wins
A huge vote of support.

The tension is broken,
By skyscraper giraffe
Who votes with his neck,
And raises a laugh.

Then: “ Time for a break,”
Calls a wide awake snake
And off they all saunter
For a cake ….or a steak.
