Results of water samples: Swartvlei (thumbs up)

6 of the 7 water samples collected from Swartvlei were compliant and lower than the Department of Water Affairs’ permitted 500 mark for recreational sites. The Swartvlei mouth was compliant at 51 per 100 milliliters. SANParks has thus removed signs warning people not to swim at the estuary’s mouth. General Manager of the Garden Route National Park (SANParks), Jill Bunding-Venter, says the rest of the sample readings were (also compliant):

Woolworths has, for several years, been involved as a sponsor for the ABSA Cape Epic cycle race. The Cape Epic is an eight day mountain bike race that traverses the farms and mountain ranges of the Western Cape and covers some 800km with over 15 000 meters of climbing.

Media Release: R1.5 million worth of equipment donated to KNP's Ranger Corps

Survival equipment to the value of R1.5 million was handed over at a ceremony in Phalaborwa on 31 October 2014. Major General (r) Johan Jooste, Commanding Officer, Special Projects for South African National Parks, and representatives of the Ranger Corps were on hand to receive the equipment. The donation was made possible by the Unite Against Poaching Trust and the SANParks Honorary Rangers.

Carcass of a whale stranded in Knoetzie (Knysna)

A carcass of a Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) washed up West of the Knoetzie River over the weekend. The team in the Knysna section of the Garden Route National Park (GRNP) have since contacted the Oceans and Coast division (Department of Environmental Affairs) and also an independent specialist based in Cape Town.

Augrabies Falls National Park (AFNP) is once again home to the Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon (KAEM) taking place from 1 November to 7 November 2014. The race, a grueling multi-stage running event that covers about 250 kilometers, is celebrating its 15th year of existence.

Treating the cause and not the symptom: Swartvlei

Authorities (SANParks, Eden District Municipality, Knysna Municipality) and the Knysna Basin Project met to discuss the situation in Swartvlei following recent media reports. A unanimous decision undertaken is to find the sources of reported E.coli counts at the mouth of the estuary. ‘It is important to find the source of the problem and treat that’ according to SANParks. 

Media Release: 54 Rhino Poaching Suspects Arrested in KNP in October

South African National Parks (SANParks) today announced the arrest of six suspected poachers and the fatal wounding of two others in two separate operations. In the first operation, Crocodile Bridge Rangers made contact with three suspected rhino poachers. In the ensuing pursuit, two were fatally wounded and the third managed to escape back into Mozambique. A hunting rifle, ammunition and other hunting equipment was recovered on the scene.

New Bird of Prey species identified in Southern Africa

And the discovery prompts birders to review old photos and it is discovered that it was recorded and found in SANParks, in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in August 2001.

Unprecedented WESSA Blue Flag results a triumph for coastal conservation during National Marine Week

WESSA (the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) has announced a record 82 Blue Flag sites for South Africa at the national launch of this year’s Blue Flag season held at Thesen Islands Marina in Knysna on the Garden Route today.  The 2014-2015 South African Blue Flag season opens officially on 1 November.

Marine Week in the Garden Route National Park

When visiting a blue flag beach this summer, the expectation is to find a clean, safe and environmentally friendly place. This is the case with beaches and Marinas granted Blue Flag status in and around the Garden Route National Park (GRNP). One is in Wilderness and the other in Nature's Valley and a Blue Flag Marina on Thesen Island in Knysna.
