A total of 44 confiscated cycads, stolen near the town of Jansenville in the Eastern Cape, will be replanted in Addo Elephant National Park. The cycads are estimated to be at least 500 years old.

Criminals in the Addo area of the Eastern Cape poached more than fifty irreplaceable cycads over Valentine’s weekend. Two truckloads of cycad, many reaching between 3 and 4.5 meters high, were confiscated by authorities. These plants are slow growing and are between 500 and 1000 years old. An aerial census of the area identified more dug up cycads in the veld.

The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa today introduced the Committee of Inquiry tasked with investigating the feasibility of a trade in rhino horn.
The 2015 SANParks Honorary Rangers, West Rand Region’s birding weekends are in full swing in the Kruger National Park. Held in partnership with Birdlife South Africa and Sasol, these weekends held across 20 camps within the park are aimed raising funds for conservation through educating and exposing the public to the wonders of birding.
A new wine brand, launched at the end of 2014, has already raised over R100 000 to be used in the war against rhino poaching within South Africa’s national parks. The Rhino Tears range of wines, from the Mt Vernon estate in Cape Town, donates proceeds from every bottle sold to Unite Against Poaching, and after selling 8852 bottles since its launch in October 2014, has now contributed the substantial amount to the cause.

The whereabouts of the two buffaloes spotted along Mountain Drive towards the end of last year is still unknown, although it is possible that they could have returned to their natural habitat. The pair has not been seen since rangers lost track of them in the thick reeds and bushes along the Sundays River the day after they were first sighted. Local resident, Susan Edwardes, first spotted the animals while walking with her dogs along Mountain Drive on 31 December.

The first month of every new year is normally a time for resolutions, new hopes, determination and a fresh lease on life. And while this is true for the Garden Route National Park (GRNP), it has also become a time for reflecting over the past year. 2014 was not only the year which marked twenty years in South Africa’s young democracy, it also marked the 50th year of successful management of the Tsitsikamma Marine Protected Area (MPA).
Following complaints from citizens that toilet paper was seen floating in the estuary, Professor Brian Allanson (‘Prof’) of the Knysna Basin Project reported on the cause of the evident sea lettuce/ macro-algae to the Knysna Pollution Action Committee (SANParks, Knysna Municipality, Eden District Municipality and the Knysna Basin Project).
