Celebrate WWF's Earth Hour with SANParks
On Saturday 23 March at 20h30, SANParks encourages you to switch off your lights for Earth Hour – and if you’re going to be staying in one of the below national parks over the long weekend, here are some “Things to do in the Dark”:
Star Gazing in West Coast National Park
Join park staff and West Coast Honorary Ranger, Binks MacKenzie, in a night of star-gazing at Kleinmooimaak inside West Coast National Park (WCNP). Binks MacKenzie will take you through basic astronomy, how to find constellations and story-telling on the legends of the Koi-Koi, Namakwa, Bushmen and Xhosa people, from 20h30 to 22h30.
Normal conservation fees to the park apply (R34 per adult and R17 per child) and picnic baskets from Geelbek Restaurant will be available for pre-order at R220 for 2 people and R65 per child.
Bookings can be made with the WCNP Tourism Office on 022 707 9902/3.
Braai and Star-Gazing in Bontebok National Park
Whether staying the night in the park, or simply visiting for the evening, join park staff and special guests for a braai and evening of story-telling and star-gazing at Die Stroom picnic site, from 20h30 til 22h00.
From 19:30 until 20:30, special guests will tell stories about the park and its exciting history as well as interesting facts and myths about the park. At 20:30 all lights will be switched off for Earth Hour, during which the Bontebok National Park Field Rangers will share stories and information on star-gazing.
Die Stroom gate will be open for day visitors from 07:00 until 19:00 on Saturday 23 March and day visitors are invited to stay until 22:00 when all visitors will be escorted either to Die Stroom gate or back to the rest camp.
Bookings are essential and can be made at the Bontebok National Park Reception on 028 514 2735.
Moonlit wine-tasting and story-telling with Agulhas National Park
If you’re staying the night in at Agulhas National Park, join park staff for a moonlit stroll with story-telling from the park reception to the lagoon – hear about the various shipwrecks along the Agulhas coastline, the possible grave of an Indian princess and the mega midden on the western side of the lagoon.
Strandveld Vineyards will offer a wine-tasting under the stars, together with Mr and Mrs Albertyn, original owners of the Lagoon House and area who will share stories with guests about days gone by and the Strandvelders’ Christmas holiday traditions.
There is no charge for participating in the activities; however space is limited to guests booked in the park accommodation on Saturday 23 March. Bookings can be made through Agulhas National Par reception on 028 435 6078.
