Media Release: Agulhas lighthouse under renovation
Date: 2012-11-29
Transnet, the owner of the actual lighthouse, has already started with the renovations on the building. In lieu of the fact that tourism season is on hand, Transnet has endeavoured to keep the lighthouse open for visitors until the last two weeks in January 2013 and will open again in February 2013. Tourists will therefore still be able to access the lighthouse tower, however they must exercise caution.
In addition, the renovations means that the coffee shop/restaurant will be unable to operate, visitors cannot have a sit down meal in the midst of renovations. It is also fortunate that the contract of the current restaurant operator has expired, leading the way for more role players to become involved in the precinct once all renovations are completed.
Visitors to the lighthouse continue to have the option of eating at nearby restaurants, several of which are within walking distance of the lighthouse.
While Transnet is responsible for the actual lighthouse, South African National Parks is responsible for the upgrade of the lighthouse precinct. Plans for the precinct must be in line with the heritage value of the site. It is envisioned that the precinct will offer several commercial opportunities for potential operators.
