News Release: SANParks fulfils Mandela’s wish

Date: 2011-07-18

This year, in commemoration of his 93rd birthday, SANParks joined forces with Sunny Park Shopping Centre to once again participate in this nation building initiative by hosting two soup kitchens which were be placed at two focal points in Marabastad at the Marabastad Jazz Park, as well as in Sunny Side at the entrance of Sunny Park Shopping Centre from 10:00 to 12:00. SANParks also identified the need for blankets which were handed out at the two kitchens.

SANParks CEO, Dr. David Mabunda said that his organisation would give full support to the initiative and urged not only SANParks employees but all South Africans to embrace this initiative beyond July 18, and try to make a difference every day.

“We have been handed the torch to take Madiba’s life’s work forward and play an active role in building up communities, this initiative urges all south Africans to do what they can to make a difference in the lives of those who are destitute, this day encompasses the essence of Ubuntu bringing forth hope of a better future for all” said Dr. Mabunda.

Mandela Day is a celebration of our collective power to do good and make a mark on the world and we can all add to its momentum by doing our bit.  Serving our communities makes all South Africans a part of the process of developing and improving our nation, and thus each and every person should understand the importance of their role and contribution, no matter how small, to the success of this country.
