Mountain Zebra National Park lends a helping hand

Date: 2009-05-13

The Mountain Zebra National Park, in collaboration with the Working for Water Project, donated some much needed manpower to help at the Cradock Hospice during April and May this year. For a long time the Hospice’s boundary wall has been requiring some touch ups and a new paint job, even more so when vandals decided to leave their undesirable marks with some spray painting.

The Cradock Hospice cares for terminally ill patients as well as orphaned children and mostly relies on donations for funding.

The whole process started as a South African National Parks (SANParks) initiative for World Aids Day, to commemorate the day by actually donating or volunteering resources to assist local communities. With these goals in mind, the Park contacted the head of the hospice Sonja Greyling who mentioned that they had wanted to repaint the house for a long time, and SANParks could help them get started by fixing and painting the boundary wall and railings.

The Working for Water Project, a poverty relief project that provides employment on a contractual basis as well as training to local community members, was then contacted who were more than willing to offer a hand as part of their community development work. Although it took some time and planning, on the 24 April 48 men and women turned up to do their part. The work involved cleaning up the yard, sanding the walls and filling up cracks, painting the garage as well as the front wall, railings and some of the inside walls. The work was completed on May 8 as there was limited days of availability and bad weather also hampered the work process.

The work done at the Cradock Hospice is but a start to Mountain Zebra National Park’s long term goal of giving back to the local communities.

As there is very little cellphone network coverage in the Park, for emergencies please contact the Entrance Gate on (048) 881 9069.
