A run-in with a rhino

Our Wilderness Adventure trails allow our more adventurous guests up-close and personal encounters within the Kruger Park by exploring the unspoiled wilderness on foot. We have asked Steven Oosthuizen, the Olifants trail ranger to share some of his exhilarating stories from the trail… We hope to provide you with regular insights into his everyday life and thus allow you to share in the excitement.

Steven Oosthuizen, Olifants Trail ranger:

“On this particular day we were walking in the Metsi Metsi stream for the afternoon. After passing a huge herd of buffalo and numerous elephant bulls (already making it quite an exciting afternoon), we noticed a big white rhino bull coming out from the spruit. We were some distance from the bull and up-wind.

For some reason the bull noticed us and headed in our direction. He started off slowly but very quickly started running towards us. Luckily, our group was a very well-behaved bunch and we had a good tree to hide behind. My colleague, Abel Maluleke and I moved the guests behind the tree. We both then stood guard either side of the tree. Once we realised that the bull was headed towards the other side, we moved in that direction and shouted our warnings.  The bull was obedient and ran past us.

Lol! The relieved guests uttered quite a few “excited” words and soon we headed back to the vehicle. Obviously the incident was discussed in detail and at length around the camp fire that night. A true African adventure!”
