The Untamed – Part 18
Kathleen had already left when Jeremy came back late in the afternoon.
Danny, walking on clouds and scarcely able to believe his good fortune in landing the woman of his dreams, was on the verge of breaking the news when he decided against it. The deciding factor was Jeremy’s pallor and mood, which was unusually lugubrious.
“Not such a nice day, was it?” Danny probed over dinner, watching the quiet, withdrawn face of his nephew. They were sitting at the dining-room table eating a good home cooked meal.
Jeremy sighed heavily and put down his fork.
“It was a good day actually,” he said wearily, leaning back in the chair and for the first time since he had come back he looked directly at Danny. “I’ve seen more ghosts. At Makhadzi. That part of the day was terrible!” He gave a wan, crooked smile.
Danny stiffened as he continued: “Only twice now I’ve seen these things, the other time when I was with you at Letaba a year ago. Today caught me unawares. It is…it is not at all desirable to get ripped into space and time the way it had happened. And it was yet again a love triangle. Three people died this time and I’ve been wondering if I had a hand in their demise because I..!” His face was suddenly stricken. Shakily he ran his hand through his hair.
“Why?” asked Danny gently.
“I interfered, scared the horses and their reaction drew the attention of the guards, the captain woke up and pursued his friend who abducted his wife, and the end result was death to all three of them. Danny, if I didn’t frighten the horses they could have lived, but I had to do something to try and save the wife!”
“Don’t let it get to you then. That was a real catch-22 situation, wasn’t it? You did what you had to do and it is long gone. You must save yourself now, not get thrown by the consequences.”
“I’ll be okay. I just hope it won’t happen often – or rather never at all! Oh, bonte divine! I’ve learnt one thing though: Twice I’ve seen the terrible repercussion love can have when it gets out of hand. I am scared out of my wits by that word now! I do not think I am cut out for this true love thing, the madness thereof..! Will you excuse me, I think I need to go clear my head, go for a walk through town or something.” The chair scraped over the tiled floor as he came to his feet.
Danny nodded and sighed as he watched him go.
Here was another “Wild and Free” being molded.
Another one of The Untamed….
The End.

Hi there Ansie, it’s been a long time since I dipped into Danny and Kathleen’s world, but think of them often. My book is on track (publish date Jan 2012, Random House – can’t wait!), my new website is almost finished, my blog is on it’s feet… so no more excuses, it’s time to catch up.
Look forward to it, in fact I am going to convince my husband that an extended camping trip at Shingwedzi is in order, with printouts of all the tales. Only problem is, our 5 year old may not be as keen as we are. But what else are firelit nights under the stars for?
I hope you don’t mind, I have added a link to Time Traveller to my Squioo webpage, with a feed to the stories.
Fondest regards,
Mellissa Bushby.
