Good Evening again! A long day, 9hrs in the car with a break inbetween, but again a very rewarding day and a great day to be in Kruger!
As usual, first to the comments! Wayne and Janice Hill….keep on commenting, one day you will be the first, just dont wait to long…70days to go! Tibby, although Im not an expert in photography..Im glad that something I said helped you…keep on practising! Oh those quiet days really breaks my heart, not many roads to travel from here although Maroela camp really brings you home to Kruger! But, when its so quiet all I want to do is go home! I always say to “Engel” the Elephant hanging on the door….come on now, do your job….look and find me something to see! Suzet I did enjoy Croc Bridge…another small camp, a bit run down at the moment…really needs a bit of attention..that is why I did not put it on my list. Balule…dont know yet..will only be camping there for the first time from the 1st to 19th Feb! Green Widow, only after I read your comment did I go back to the Zebra, really did not see what you meant…it really looks like shes got something on her ears…but with this pic you can clearly see there is nothing….think it was just the way she shook her head to try and get away from this thing around her neck!
I can just imagine you keeping track of the time of the fam around the world…its bad enough for me trying to remember where Engel is tonight! Sylvia Kaplan….it seems like we have a lot of poetic ppl reading this blog….thank you so much for yours! It truly makes me feel very inadequate that I cant give you a poetic blog! Im not a writer, a poet or an expert on anything…and all those asking for a book….you tell me how to do it…and maybe I can put something together….Engel (GW) whats after this??? My home in Doha, my job and you offcourse! Unless you get tired of my nagging and sponsor a few months in the Kgalagadi!!! Trekboer Thomas, a reunion in a few years time…lets see what happens, you would probably all have forgotten about this grazy woman living her dream! Fiona, I cant blog without a fire..its gives me calmness….it reminds me Im in Kruger…and as said before, if I dont eat properly I will fall over! Annette (click click) I know you have seen these 2 males, or maybe you only saw the one….I cant open the pic you sent me….really would like to show the readers a clear and close up pic! Ced and Veronica, when I drove the Timbavati road from Satara side a few weeks ago there were still small pools of water in the riverbed…the same as always….from this side today…the same…not much water, no flowing water as far as I could see…just pools! M’Africa..if you direct me towards the tree…telling me where exactly in camp I would be happy to post a pic for you…I have no clue about direction…North is always infront of me!!! I know the sun comes up in the East and sets in the west…and that is all I know about this! Pumba thank you so much for that nice saying…leaving a golden footprint in the bush and also in your hearts! REally makes the time blogging so much more rewarding! JP you have hit the nail on the head….Tsendze and Maroela must be the 2 camps that bring you so much closer to Kruger…as said before! fenwickh, you sound like a great cook, maybe you should come and cook for me for the last 70 days….crayfish cooked on the fire! Absolutely bliss! Elizma Muller, the wait for that animal to move is always the greatest part…and when it does..its like winning a milllion dollars! Must say the tents at Tamboti with the bathrooms are great…we have stayed there before! All others reading and commenting, thank you again!
Back to today! I have arranged a few weeks ago to meet up with a forum member Quickie at Timbavatie Picnic Spot today….when we first started talking it turned out that they dont often (or never when its just him and his mother) have a “skottel” breakfast at a picnic site! That set the tune for today….I was going to make them a good breakfast on the skottel….or so I thought….just a bit of background and Im sure he would not mind me telling you the story…..On the day of his 21st birtday him and his brother were in a car accident…a young girls skipped a red traffic light (signal) and they had a bad accident! Now he is in a wheelchair and his mother looks after him….that is the reason they dont do skottel breakfasts! It really felt so great and rewarding to do something for someone else reading this blog…how can I ever say thank you! I left camp just after 6am…and was on my way..we arranged to meet between 9:30 and 10 so I had a lot of time getting there…
The usual sighting around here are Zebra, Impala, Blue Wildebeest and a Buff or Elephant thrown inbetween, not to mention the jackals! A tour operator with a trailer behind was reversing for an angry Elephant, I stayed well away…waited until they had passed and then went pass at the speedlimit.. I did not look left or right…just straight ahead incase he thought I was also looking at him! As I got to the S36/S39 Talamati/Timbavati turn off I slowed down…knew the Cheetahs are around here..and then a glimpse…luckily on my way after I turned…it was only me there…but know others could also see it….I had a total of 3 minutes with it before the circus arrived!
I could see the brother away in the bush…and this one was calling to it..no engine running an the sound was amazing…not loud..just like a whisper…it looked towards the road…
Then turned around to call to its brother!
Just then an open vehicle (JJ) arrived with a lot of young tourist on the back….please dont get me wrong….I just wish that they would tell thier clients to remain seated and be quiet…I know they were excited to see Cheetah..but really no need to carry on like that….as I looked back to talk to this guy….the Cheetah bolted! It ran like it had a million lions behind it! The brother just dissapeared into the bush…they did not even stop to try and find it again…just carried on! I was really angry…but then a South African couple arrived and the lady asked me if I saw the lion running away! “Yes, I saw it” I said….but just so you know it was a Cheetah not a lion…..she told me their eyesight was not so good without the binocs and left!
The rest of the way sightings real quiet and that is when I start looking for the unusal or some will say the usual that ppl dont stop for. First up this Giraffe standing next to a Thorn tree I think…it just looked so nice..and again wished I had a rising or setting sun to make it a great pic!
and a little further a herd of impala standing in the shade of a tree…but the seeds on the grass was swaying in the wind and caught the sunlight every now and again…I could not capture that…but hope my words can make you imagine seeing it.
About 2km from the turn off to the picnic spot a pump with its motor was going…probably pumping water from a borehole or river to the picnic site…an employee waved me down and asked if I could give him a lift to the picnic spot as there are 2 lions just up the road…no prob….he got in….I saw the lions…dropped him off and back I went.
Two young females it looked like, but just so difficult…think just like teenagers! They would not look at me the same time! The one would look straight at me, but then the other one had its head down! I eventually got these 2 pics…sorry the one has a bit of thorn bush in its eye…
and eventually like said…a better shot…still not perfect!
Got to the picnic area just after 9:30 and started setting up…I took some canned fruit (sorry could not find any fresh at Orpen shop), yoghurt and the eggs and tomatoes from here…they brought the sausage, bacon (kasslers) and the mushrooms…the wind was really howling and I wondered how I would make a skottel in those conditions…I waited…and waited….I started talking to another 2 couples and it was great to pass the time…eventually they asked if I could not call…said I had no signal, but the attendant there told me that you could get mtn signal up the hill….little did I knwo what he meant! The couple offered me to use their phone, but the attendant had mtn and said I could use his phone…I was really worried that I had the place wrong..checked the msgs on my cell and confirmed it was today, Tuesday the 19th Jan! How could I have missed the location….not sure…so I worried about that! I already missed meeting the Chappies one day and really felt so bad, could not do it another time!
I walked up the hill to the ablutions, but the guy told me…no not here…on the hill! Did not know that I was going to do a bush walk today! All the way up the mountain…right on top I had to climb up a rock and there was a signal! I did not feel very comfortable…this guy did not even had a gun! I asked him about being scared..he said…no the lions know me! What a relief for a second….but, they did not know me! I tried to call and only got an answering machine! Anyway I tried….back down the hill, must tell you I walked a bit faster than normal….and had a beer….then started packing up.
Just as I packed the plates away, they arrived! Really glad I waited…we dont always realize how long it takes to get ready to go somewhere if you are in a wheelchair…and then they also forgot the mushrooms and had to turn around….As said the wind was really howling…and I found it extremely difficult to make the food…the flame wouldbe on the highest setting and still nothing would be cooking…but eventually all was done…..Q and mother..it was a real pleasure meeting you…and thank you for taking the time to come and have a breakfast/brunch/lunch with me! I truly enjoyed the time spent with you!
No major sightings on the way back to camp…real slow apart from an Elephant that was grazing on the side! Again, I did not stop to bring you a pic! Back at camp another surprise awaited me….it seems like the monkeys had a party on the awning…and now both sides are torn….I have to take it down tomorrow and go to Hoedspruit to try and have it fixed! The dishes done, the comments read, my sauce made for my chic and broccoli bake…no time to go for a drive, but then…I really did not feel like it…a long day..good sightings and I must go!
