Living My Dream Day 254 (Satara Day 11)
Good Evening again…at least tonight I can blog with hundred of bugs around ….not millions like a few days ago~but I can survive with these few around!
To the comments…again…and I thank you all for reading and commenting…and a warm welcome again to the new readers and commentars! I really appreciate it! DocD, Im not sure, but can check the setting for the LBR pic…I put the cam on program P and it does it all for me! Tjoppa, so sorry I will miss your famous potjie…but October we are going to Cape Town, no Kruger for me…have my daughters wedding and that will definately take up all our time! Erika, wow, a LBR with a snake….must have been awesome to watch! Green Widow I can tell you that Engel (GW) has so many things to sort out…after moving house he was not there for a while….and I think you can imagine how much stuff hes got…..screws, nails, fishing gear, gadgets…millions of them….at least he is home for a few days before he flies out to South America again…hopefully it will all be in place when I get back home! I will get to your other comment later! Madeleine..I would rather have these bugs than a snake in my bed or even here in my camp! I will try your recipe of cloves on the fire and see what happens! Also, Mike and Delene, I have my Citronella lamps burning, but far away from my camp…these bugs were all over it! Rusky, nice to hear from you again, hope you have an awesome trip in India…cant imagine how many birds you will add to your list! Danie and Alma Steyn, so sorry I forgot to add the pic of Nsemani Dam…just for you, here is one that I tried to take this am! Not a great pic and already 10 days without rain, but still full!

Annette (click click) so glad you got some nice sightings on your way out….and to you and Kitwebun…..the guy that went off the road at the Leopard and lion sightings was reported by someone who took pics….I met up with Mobi (the traffic cop) again and he was very proud to tell me that he went looking for this guy and found him at the car wash! A R3000 fine was given! I really appreciate seeing and hearing that some camps like Satara is doing all they can to curb this behaviour! Well done to all! JenE @cullinan…glad you liked the prezzie of the LBR! Unlike me, I wont have a little thingie from Engel to open tomorrow, but then maybe Kruger will give me something special…who knows! Marelize and Hennie, who wants to see lions when you can see leopards! 3 sightings, wow…..and wilddogs! Im glad you had a good time and maybe meet you again soon! Rika Grobbelaar, I dont have my book here, but think that you are referring to an African Wood Pigeon….real beautiful colors! I also sat for a long time wathcing the first one I saw! Jaycee (MIL) the bugs are still around, just not as many as before….wish they would just get away….I dont have the exact figures but according to my “secretary” Fathima we have had almost 900 individuals commenting on the blog from almost 40 countries! Jay, thanks for following My Dream from Day 1….a book…who knows what the feature holds! DeleneD, so the cat is out of the bag…..yes, tomorrow is my birthday! Will take it slow and unfortunately its my last full day at Satara until I pack up again on Wednesday and moving to Maroela camp on Thursday!
Back to today! I took a very long drive…all the way up on the tar road towards Olifants, then turn off on the Ngotso Weir road and down the Old Main road (think the S90)….sightings of the usual were in abundance…Zebra, Wildebeest, Impala, Giraffe, Elephant and Buffs all over….then I found something again that I know is special to Engel…and especially for him again…Rhino….on the turn off to the Timbavati road..2 of them next to the road!

Then just after I turned off onto the Ngotso Weir, must say the area still looked very dry…I found another Rhino…this one with quiet a big horn…he really did not like me distrubing his snooze!

Then nothing, not even a car insight, but I enjoyed the bush, being by myself and just taking in the smells of Kruger….then all opened up…such vast areas of nothing…but I had to stop and look at the sea of flowers!

Not long after I found these 2 Steenbuck….the male was really in the mood for a romantic morning, but his wife, fiance, girlfriend would have nothing to do with him! Shame even his tongue was hanging out!

I returned to camp by 11″30 and it was already a very hot day….lots of clouds in the sky, but still no rain. Think the area up North from here need a lot more before winter time!
Played a bit of scrabble with Fathima and then my internet went on the blink…again….read my book and had a snoze and by 4pm I was ont he road again….still very hot…sure I would not see any animals in this heat…once again…I say, must be better to open the gates later and close them later…I took the S100 and apart from a few Giraffe , Impala and Wildebeest nothing around! Turned around after an hour and took the road back to camp…still the same animals, but I did find this small herd of buffs trying to cool off in a pool of water.

As I returned to camp Tibby came around for a quick chat….glad you saw the lions today….and hope you have many more great sighting on your stay here! Then a quick call from Engel.and Im done with this blog tonight…as said many times before…not a very exciting day for you with cats and dogs….but to me…another magic day in Kruger!
Until tomorrow
Sleep tite

Hi Martie, happy birthday, who says not an exciting day, what more could a person ask for than to be in KNP and for you to bring us a taste of it, as long as it has legs and moves we or at least I am happy to see what you see. So pleased to know that someone got a lekker fine for being stupid. Love the pic of flowers. Have a lovely day tomorrow. Regards Chrissie.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:53 pm
Glad I got in first to wish you for your birthday. Now that I have read and digested your blog I will comment on that.
What do you mean “not an exciting day for us” – every day in Kruger is an exciting day, just some days are better than others. Tonight’s blog might not have cats but the Sea of Flowers is beautiful – did you take a detour to Namaqualand? Lovely Rhino and Buffalo pics and such cute little Steenbuck and oh so good to see Nsemani dam looking so good.
To Mobi the traffic cop – well done – I like to read about inconsiderate idiots being fined for their misbehaviour – lets hope that R3000 fine will teach him a lesson!
The most interesting news is Fathima’s report that you have almost 900 individuals from 40 different countries who follow your blog – that is really amazing – congratulations Martie. Keep up your good work.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:58 pm
I’m so glad Mobi fined that guy
guess he’ll think twice about what it would cost him to get a nice picture next time.
from someone… and another awesome day with a special sighting or two or three… and no bugs.
Glad you found some rhinos again!
Happy birthday, hope you do get a prezzie

Happy happy birthday for Tuesday – may 2010 hold amazing blessings for you, and your loved ones too.
I hope that your day will be special – no matter what animals you get to see – and that you have lots of messages from your family & friends.
I imagine we will all be thinking of you
I will drink a toast to you after work – will be old brown sherry – so ‘enjoy’!!!
Still loving the blog, and trying to read all the comments as well, don’t always get to them all though, especially now that I am back at work! At least our school children only arrive on Wednesday in Irene, Pretoria, so tomorrow to still “ease in to things”.
Have a good ‘happy birthday’ and may all your new dreams come true too.
God bless.

Some of us are not very adventuous when it comes to cooking in Kruger.

Hi Martie – happy happy happy birthday for tomorrow. Thanks so much for the update on the jerk! Sorry – shouldn’t get so carried away, but I really dislike such bad behaviour – and he was an eledrly man with white hair and beard and should know better – so thanks so much to the guy who fined him and also to the hero who took the incriminating photos!
I am missing Kruger already even though I live on a game farm…..you must come and visit us some day. Yes – I agree – I would also like to shake your hand in thanks for bringing us your daily experiences in Kruger – I loved your Steenbok photo today – love is in the air in Kruger – we saw many amorous animals during our stay.

Hi Martie
Happy Birthday!! I am sitting here feeling really sad as I have just said goodbye to my daughter who lives in the UK and has visited us for a few weeks.
She surprised us on New years day so I have been on cloud nine since then!! Now need to catch up on my reading – looks like you had some amazing leopard sightings recently – and I would swap a good day at the office for a *quiet* day in Kruger anytime!! Hope to meet you before you leave as we get to Kruger about every two months or so. Thanks for bringing us your sightings – it brightens up my day (and sometimes very late nights!!). God Bless.

Hi Martie
Many happy returns of the day. Hope you have one fantastic day. You must give yourself off tonight and go and have a meal in the restuarant where you will be served and you don’t have to do a thing but eat and drink and listen to the noises you can hear.
You have to get someone to take a couple of photo’s of you so you can show how you spent your special day.
When my SO turned 50 we were in the park. We celebrated his birthday the Saterday evening and left the Sunday for the park his birthday was on the Tuesday. Being in the park makes one so relaxed and you don’t worry about dates etc anyway long story short I forgot it was his birthday and he never said anything either. We were at Shingwedzi anddecided to go up to Pundi Maria and buy lunch there. I had ordered our food and while I was waiting it just came to me that it was his birthday, without thinking I ran out of the cafateria back to the car the wish him. It really was funny, I don’t know what the staff thought of me ordering paying and running out without the order. I did go back though for it.
Enjoy your day and spoil yourself.

Hi Martie
Happy happy birthday – may your glass always be full.
We’ve been back in Joburg 7 days now and are having serious withdrawal symptoms – unfortunately there is no cure, but fortunately your blog keeps us sane!
Molpol40 has a good idea with a cookbook. Jeremy Mansfield’s recipe book was a combination of recipes and photos and stories of his travels and was a huge success – perhaps you should do something similar, combining recipes and photos of your time in Kruger – it can finance your next dream!
Have the most aweome day today – the blog is always great, no matter what you post – a little bit of heaven for us all to enjoy each day.

Hi Martie
HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I wish you all the things that can fill a day with happiness, specially in Kruger.
Once had my b/day in Kruger and she gave me a gift that morning I’ll always remember; a lioness with cub next to the road. To me it was so special, and I believe you will also recieve something special today.
Thanks again for all the time you put in to give us your daily experience on the blog and for sharing your stunning photos.
Yes, a cookbook, “Healthy food on a Safari” will be welcome! Chops, steak, boerewors and buns can get very boring after a few nights.
But for today, you must enjoy each and every moment in the bush and have many happy returns to this paradise!

Dear Martie,
It’s been almost a month since I last commented on the blog. It’s sad how quickly time flies. Then, I was so excited about my pending trip to SA and the Park. And now I am quite thoroughly depressed that the time passed so quickly… I really miss my family and the time we spent in the Park. But such is life.
We had a really good time and was lucky enough to see the big five, including one LOG and one LIT! It was a special treat for us. We got the chance to stay at Olifants again, and the camp is beautiful as ever. Sigh, I miss it! But now I am back to living my dream through yours! So thank you as ever for bringing us your wonderful blog every day!
All my best best wishes for a wonderful birthday! May you be rewarded with wonderful sightings. Hope you don’t miss your family too much; I’m sure they are with you in spirit.
Best,

May I ask you the condition of the gravel roads in the Satara area, in particular the Sweni Road, is that still so corrugated or has it been graded?
Hope you are having a great day so far.

Dear Martie.
A VERY HAPPY B-DAY. Hope you had a lovely day today. May God bles you and guide you all the days of your life. I must say Amanda is right. “If only all of us could be there with you tonight to have a drink with you” It would have been great. I think a book of your dream would be great. (Carmen needs funds for her project of wildlife rehab. Maybe she could help with the book.)
Have a nice day and great sightings.
Thea and Family.

Happy Birthday Martie – who could wish for a better place to be! May the bugs leave you in peace from now on.
You have made my YEAR hearing that at least 2 idiots have been given big fines recently. Once the word gets out that hefty fines are being given out, it will soon stop their moronic behaviour. Well done to Mobi.
