Living My Dream Day 249 (Satara Day 6)
Good Evening to all again! Tonight Im not getting to the comments, promise to address all of you again tomorrow night. The bugs are out in full force again tonight and I just dont feel right blogging inside the caravan! I am also only going to do a short drive tomorrow and bring you anything that I see!
Just quickly Dalene D, tomorrow is not my birthday, but a very special day as its our 26th Wedding Anniversary! I have invited Marty and fam and Annette and friend over for dinner and that is why I will only do a short drive! If you say your birthday is in 6 days time, then we must have almost the same birthday..mine is on the 12th!
Quickly back to today. After I blogged last night and sorted out a few things I set my alarm for 4am, really wanted to see if anything happened with the lions that chased the buffs along the fence! As I set it, I got a message tellin me that I had 3hrs and 12 minutes till wake up time! Could not do it, so I switched the alarm off and went to sleep! Woke up at 6am with an SMS from Engel! Eventually got out on the road at 7am. Took the tar road up towards Olifants, wanted to do the Gudzani road and then onto Nwanetsi and back down the S100! First I met Dries and son that reads the blog..they told me they saw 3 male lions close to Satara this am….Where I wanted to drive did not happen again….I found this Lanner Falcon, (first for me) with a little Quelia….watched it for about half an hour…

It had just landed on the tree with the little bird…and then started cleaning and eating it…great to watch!

Then I met a couple who told me about lions catching a baby Zebra next to their car in the morning….it sounded like it was the same 3 lions that Dries told me about….shows you once again….right place at the right time…this lady was very distressed by the whole episode, so her husband took 2 pics and they left…also told me that thier daughter is working in Qatar! How small theworld really is! Norms came from the front and told me he had only seen some Elephants, so I turned around….
I did not find the lions with the Zebra kill…a man told me the lions pulled it further into the bush and you cant see it anymore. Then I took the tar road to Nwanetsi Picnic spot…and found this Hyena den on the side…they are just so qute when they are small!

I watched them for a while and more came out from the den…really all sizes!

I did find a dead baboon lying in the road, but not sure if it was killed by something in the troop or a car..really disturnbing to see a dead animal on the road! Not much other sightings on the road and I turned onto the Gudzani road…could not believe how full the Nwanetsi spruit is…in August only a almost dried out place..now water flowing all over! Made a quick stop at Gudzani dam and took this pic…not the best…and maybe should have spent a bit more time taking the pic…but at least you can see its full…almost overflowing!

It was still raining on and off…and I had to be quick…then as usual took the S100 back to camp. I did find this Bee Eater, that Marty told me is a juv. Carmine Bee Eater…the sun had just started coming out…but still very dark..

2 cars parked on the side of the road and I recognised it as the spot with the leopard kill in the tree…I stopped…oh, and must tell you the rude man yesterday that I reported were tracked down by Mobi and given a fine of R1500! Hopefully he will not get out again…and most of all, be so rude to ppl trying to help him and the animals….Iw as told here that the leopards were still around…ppl had seen them half an hour ago…so I found a nice spot where I could see the kill and an opening in the tree and waited..Wesley and SO came around…and they parked next to me and we started chatting….not long and they got a movement! The little one was at the bottom of the tree…I will not speak about the idiots today…all I want to say is….please think of other before you get out of your car..we waited for almost 2 hours and you came and spoil it for everyone…at least he left..and then all was quiet again…a movement in the bush…and its amazing to see how the leopards work together! The mother showed herself to us…just a glimpse…and while everyone is looking at her…the little one jumped back in the tree…and started eating the leftovers of the kill!
I think I was very fortunate to see this 2 days in a row…and I think that with these pics tonight you can understand how happy I am to be in Kruger….maybe the last I will see of this young one for now…who knows if I will see it again in years to come! I could also see today that it was a young male! May he have many children one day and be a good father!
He climbled up and tried to dislodge the kill…almost falling out of the tree…I could not take any pics as it was in the branches, but I once again waited for it to come out to that one spot I could see it all! And so it did!
First bringing up the last bit of the kill…

and then started eating th last bit of whatever was leftover…I took almost 4GB of pics..and again wish I could show you all of them…but not to be….I tried to take 3 of what I think tells the story…and once again so great to bring you pics of this leopard!

Then it lay down and just looked at us….really awesome to see that look on its face!

It turned around and continued eating at the bottom of the branch…I could not see it…Ian and fam came by and told me I would have a better look from the other side…but no, I was waiting to get that last look….as I looked up a big herd of Elephaant were approaching…no ways Im sitting in the road with them walking towards us..and I took this last pic as I had to go!

Glen and daughter were also there…maybe they got a glimpse of it at the bottom of the tree, if not….Im sorry…but they had to go…and sure you will kick yourself tonight as not even 10minutes after he left….this all happened!
I returned to camp at 3pm…got a pie from the take away, really starving…and then came back to clean up a bit and have a lie down! By 4pm I was up…but invited Annette and friend over for a braai and I had to get goiing with the food etc…but again…it took a long time…
Fenwickh and fam and friends came around….then Basil who teach in Sharjah…then Ian and clan..thanks for the beers and the apples…and by that time it was after 7:30…Luckily, Annette and then got delayed ….an Elephant blocked the road from Nsemani Dam to camp and almost 50cars arrived more than 40 minutes late for the camp! Apart from that excitement, they also had a leopard that killed an Impala at the dam…sadly….the ppl drove right up to it and it left the kill and dissapeard into the bush…really hope it will come back and fetch its prey!
Eventually the fire was going and Annette and Angie arrived…then all of a sudden the little black bugs were back! You cant believe how many of them are around …millions..and they once again got into everything…my hair, my food, my fire, my ears! I switched off all the lights and Annette would only shine the torch when I really needed to see anything….made fillet steak with potatoe wedges and a salad…that all done, we ate inside tonight…as they were going the bugs became less and I can at least sit outside here now and bring you a blog! The mosquitos have also come out in full force..and the other beetles are really testing my patience! But, the blog is done, I have survived another night with them all…and what a great day I had!
Tomorrow night I will only address the comments, unless I see something awesome!
Until then
Sleep tite
Martie

Hi – I just cannot believe how many leopards you see! It’s amazing to read the stories watch the pictures, thank you for all the hard work blogging every night! I was in Kruger a few weeks ago for 8 days, down at L Sabie, but only found one leopard. Really hope next time I go (next month) I’d get a bit of your luck. But still, even if I see nothing larger than a steenbuck, Kruger never ceases to amaze, calm and inspire.

Hi Neighbour
Awesome shots of the young prince – so glad he finally got his meal in the end!
Also loved the lanner – to watch the grace and skill with which they fly – I’m sure Engel would appreciate that.
Good night, sleep tight, at least the little black bugs don’t bite

Hi Leopard queen, you never cease to amaze me! Your pics are incredible!!! The Vaal Dam is also pretty crazy with funny little beetle bugs and of course the big “jag spinekop” – they are so fast and SO just catches them in his hand very carefully and puts them outside!!!! I think if one had to crawl on my face, I would’nt be sane for quite some time!!!!! Its great to be home and have a signal, I really battled at our house at the dam, even my cell showed Edge/sos! – I had withdrawal symptoms, I missed your blog so much and thought of you on New Year, but thank goodness you were’nt alone. Have a great day tomorrow!!! Happy Anniversary!!!!

Morning Martie from a very misty Pretoria! It smells so lovely outside! Congrats on your wedding anniversary to you and your Engel! May God give you many more happy years together! For sure a milestone in ones life! Great sightings again, your pictures are just stunning, please tell me you are going to write a book and not sell it for a fortune, so that I can afford it and so that we can see you back in the Kruger again with all the money you make off the sales! Hope you have a superb drive today and that the idiots will remain in their cars!

Hallo Martie
Happy Anniversary! Hope your guys have plenty more to come. Great pics. Don’t you think that the leopards down in the south are darker than the one’s up north. Maybe it’s because we haven’t seen one lately.
Have a great day.
regards
Thea.

Happy anniversary to the 2 Engels! May you be blessed with many more and hopefully your next anniversary will be spent together in Kruger! Martie, your photos are stunning to say the least! Great sightings!
January 7th, 2010 at 7:29 am
Morning Martie,
You are definately the ‘leopard findind guru’. You have proved tho’ that patience is indeed a vertue.
Most of us are not able to spend as much time at a sighting purely because of a lack of available time, as our time in Kruger is limited.
I for one, will definately allow myself more viewing time when planning my next trip, to allow for the chance that I should get so lucky!!
Your photos are amazing!! Both of the Falcon and of the leopard.
Happy anniversary to both you and your SO. You obviously have a wonderful marriage and I wish you many more happy years together.
Have a wonderful day today.
January 7th, 2010 at 7:31 am
PS: Meant to include the hyena photos too. They look soooo cute. Must say that I have a soft spot for hyenas.
January 7th, 2010 at 7:46 am
Hi Martie,
To you and your Engel I say Happy Anniversary. Pity he couldn’t be with you in Kruger but I guess you are enjoying Kruger enough for both of you. I knew your Bidthday was near to mine, but was not sure when. So I will wish you again on the 12th. keep on with your dream and making it so good for the rest of us. Lovely leopard pics again and birds. Try to ignore the idiots in th Park School starts next week so Park may be quieter then. Hope so. God bless, Delene D.

Magic photos!! Amazing how ppl are just so damn stupid!! They should rather visit their local zoo - quite clear they do not appreciate the KP.
Nothing more exciting than after waiting a while, something happens or pops up from no where.
Happy Anniv.
Besides a book on your dream, you could publish one just on leopards - really gorgeous pics you have over the months.
Don’t blame you for not hanging around with elephants – we were charged by one lonesome bull last week and it was scary.
January 7th, 2010 at 8:00 am
Absolutely awesom photos!! Congrats on your anniversary. Have a good day.
January 7th, 2010 at 8:24 am
Hi martie, Happy anniversary. Hope you have many more together. Wow what amazing pictures, just bought a new camera so hoping we can get some shots like that when we are there in march, but I think we will need plenty of practise with it first. Thanks for always keeping us bloggers in the kruger with you. (wishing we could be there too) Take care Bev

CONGRATULATIONS AND A HAPPY 26th ANNIVERSARY MARTIE AND STEPHEN – May God Bless you two for many more years of Health and Happiness together. Today is my youngest son’s 21st wedding anniversary, in Toronto Canada.
I don’t know another word to describe your pictures of the Leopard – they are absolutely stunning – thank you for your patience and for sharing with us. Also gr8 pics of the Falcon, young Hyenas and Juv. Carmine B-E. Lovely to see Gudzini Dam so full – it was bone dry when I was there in October.
I was glad to read that the parks have come to the party and issued a stiff fine to that idiot – they need to publish the pictures that were taken of the idiots together with a caption telling people of the R1500 fine that was issued. If these were displayed at the entrance gates perhaps others will get the message.
I hope that you enjoy your anniversary supper with your friends tonight – I am sure it will be better than Grasswidower’s cold club sandwich !! He is really missing you!
January 7th, 2010 at 8:43 am
Hi Martie
Congratulations on your anniversary. What can I say about your pics today WOW I am speachless, when I tell people about your blog I tell them it is my “fix” as following it is the next best thing to being there in person as you manage to bring it alive todays pics are out of this world and its really as if we are there with you, as for the bugs………you keep them ha ha. Great to hear the guy got what he deserved and lets hope this will teach him a lesson.

Hi Martie
Awsome shots again.Your blog is like a good bottle of red wine it just keeps getting better & better.Wish more of the public would do what you did in taking photos of those inconsiderate people out of their cars & then repoting them so they can be traced & fined. If every body did this it would soon put a stop to a lot of this type of thing.
Regards
January 7th, 2010 at 9:24 am
Morning Martie,
Your leopard pics are stunning – You have one awesome day – I was on the website yesterday and am planning a trip to Kgalagadi National Park. This is a park with a difference compared to Kruger!! Open plains and desert dunes but with many different species. Its long-term as I’m first going back to Kruger in July, which myself and my husband have been doing for the last few years. I also have a 400D Cannon but need to invest on a bigger lens as I love photography and would like to go further with this hobby.
I have some awesome pics which I took last year July which I would love to share with you.
Perhaps you can drop me your email address and I can then send it onto you. Nesta

Fantastic pics once again.
I remember those bugs from when we were in the park last year, also had to go inside to eat.
Take care,

Have been reading the blog from the beginning and am also a keen wildlife photographer and I think these are some of the best leopard pictures you have taken so far.
The eyes on the cub have so much expression and just tell a story.
All I can say is AMAZING!!! Well done!!

Hi Martie
Congratulations to you and GW.
A day to celebrate, my youngest son passed Matric!!
Beware of all the mozzies, apparently over a 1000 cases of malaria reported…result of all the rain.
How far were these leopards from the road?
Thanks for sharing these amazing sightings…you can be proud of your photograhic prowess…stunning pics
January 7th, 2010 at 1:40 pm
Hi Martie
Happy New Year and best of luck for your last few months living your dream. It was a special bonus to meet you at LS.
Just a quick question. Where was that giraffe kill in the road that you documented so well? It would be interesting to see how nature has dealt with the carcass since you were last there. Must be at least 3 months ago!
You have been so fortunate with your sightings of leopard. That shows that having time on your side to wait and observe instead of doing the tourist thing does pay off. We were very fortunate to see the cub and Mom near LS.
As always we enjoy reading your blog. Thank You

It’s impossible to decide between all your leopard pics which is best. We’ve decided they all are!!! The watchfulness in the eyes in these above is incredible. Yhe concentration never waivers. The lanner falcon and its prey quite something also. Lovely.

Hi Martie

Sorry my mistake. My name Tjoppa.
January 7th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
Hi Martie – absolutely stunning pictures of the immature lanner with prey. And – wow – that baby leopard! Awesome!
Thanks for the chat last night – it was wonderful to meet you.
We saw another leopard in a tree on the H1-4 just before the turnoff to S33.
Sadly we leave the park tomorrow and will take a slow trip home to Cape Town.
January 7th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
Hi Martie
Was also in Satara on the 6th and saw the same leopards in the tree, wish I could meet you! My dream of spending my 40th birthday in the Kruger came true, now in Letaba till the 9th, enjoy your stay!!!!!
January 7th, 2010 at 9:26 pm
Hi Martie,
I read about you in the Vrouekeur magazine, I live 90 mintes from the Orpen gate, and yes last nights the ‘stinkgoggas’ was
terrible. I am running a openair lapa bar-restaurant at Bonlati and those things just kill a nights bussiness! I am glad to hear that you
are at Satara currently, I am planning a short getaway for myself and would really like to meet you. I think we can talk about a lot.
I used to do safaris in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and the whole of South Africa, done the camel back thing across the
Namib, did the swamps four times a year in the Okavango, worked for 4 years on an Overland truck and so many more!
I really fumbled myself on your story about the stone in your bed… yes we all have similar experiences. A 2liter bottle with hot water
have lesser consequences. My husband is going to Germany next week for just over four weeks to do trade faires, and I want to go to Kruger
for some two or three nights. (My niece is a sanparks employee at Phalaborwa gate, also in the natureconservation thing).
Please email me or leave a message on the blog if you have time for an evening around the fire with plain company. After 5 years of
doing all my safari work in Manyeleti I am now at Bonlati, close to Ofcolaco (which is the middle of nowhere) for almost two years, and
I would like to speak to someone who actually is talking my language!
Thank you for giving Vrouekeur the opportunity, for me to meet you!
Best Regards
Anita van Rensburg
January 7th, 2010 at 9:29 pm
Happy anniversary Martie and Engel! Wishing you lots more filled with much love and happiness! Thanks for the great pics. The little leopard is just awesome!
January 7th, 2010 at 9:30 pm
Howzit, I hope that the bugs and mozzies have quitened down by now , must be as a result of all the rain that you have had or are they more prevalent in the Satara area ?. It must be rather unpleasant to try and cook food under those conditions and even worse to share your food with goggas ! What amazing luck you have had with your sitings of Leopards but it proves that if you have the patience to wait you will be rewarded. That youngster with the kill in the tree was special. Best wishes to you and Stephen on another year, amazing to think that it is a whole year since your Silver, hope that you have a good evening with your guests. xxx
January 7th, 2010 at 9:49 pm
Hi Martie !

Hi Martie,
HAppy Anniversary for yesterday and hope you will indeed be blessed!
I give all my sympathies with those will black goggas as my house is ivqaded by them every evening when I am cooking n the summer – and oh do they smell funny when I sweep them out! and they alwasy have the copper beetles for company and the also get in everywhere!
I am in love with this leopard you’ve seen the last cuple of days. THe young one has such a unique face! and the eyes are so beautiful.
Thanks for sharing all the magic of kruger – it has really cheered me up as I have been having a terrible week.
Till next time, enjoy
Cheers

hi – thanks for an awesome blog……if you only know how much i envy you even though i live in Cape Town.
On a more serious note todays paper carried a rather depressing report about the park citing lack of proper management - leaving the park looking like a bit of an eyesore. Is this true – you have been there for 250 days now !

Hi Martie,
What can I say …. WOW! your leopard pics are out of this world!! Patience gets rewarded!
How on earth are you going to survive without the bush when you have to leave?
Keep well, wishing you a “bug” free night
