Living My Dream Day 248 (Satara Day 5)
A rather chilly good evening to you all! It started raining yesterday and all through the night…even as I left this am it was still raining! I did not have many hopes for seeing much…but then again, I was wrong!
A very special thank you to MIL (jaycee) for the wonderful comment posted yesterday! I really appreciate it and glad I could share a little time of Living My Dream with you! Engel..GW, the magic storm we had was at Pretoriuskop in Jan 2009! What a night it was!! Dalene D, sorry but GW beat you to being first! Green Widow, I love the cool days, but the wind here at Satara is something else…really thougth the caravan will blow away today…and my awning that is already in need of repairs….well I need to get to Hoedspruit as soon as I leave here to have it repaired..that is if it last that long! Tony Park, nice to hear from you again…hope you enjoy Kenia..and see you again soon! Trekboer Thomas, hope you had a fab time on the panamacanal cruise! Cant believe its so long ago I met you at PKop! Marty, I do understand what you saying..and have said many times before…I could just stop the car…listen, look and absorb whatever sounds, sights etc Kruger can show me! I love the silence…the spoor I can see and wonder when, how or whereto the lion, leopard, dog etc has walked!
Wow, now I had to stop! I heard this thundering of hoofs, not sure what it was….then Marty had his spotlight on it! 2 (from what we could see) lionesses chasing the buffalo right on the other side of the fence! Really hope we can hear a kill tonight!! Absolutely magic!!!!
Now calmed down a bit…must get on with the comments! Erika, I do remember you…I had to reverse to get to you as you had the trailer behind. I think I blogged about the YR…maybe I spelled the name wrong…you know me and spelling…bad enough to try and remember the names…spelling…not my forte! Chrissie, the visitors book is here, the problem is I forget to ask ppl to write in it! Still many pages left! Lorna, glad to hear your chicken in the box was enjoyed by all…really a good idea and just so succulent and different! Susan Bredenhann…I dont know all the details about the Leopard…but do know that they tried to dart it, but again ppl were a bit stupid and went looking for it and they had no choice but to shoot it! I agree with you, the roads, especially to the borders posts are a real disaster! Angie, glad you had a good time in Addo, and how lucky to see an Aardwolf! Fathima, I still cant believe its more than 2 years ago I told you about me coming to Kruger for 1 Year, remember how we checked the comments to see what ppl told me to do! And now, its almost finished! Glad I dont have to pack up the office again! Enjoy and I cant wait to get there and actually see it! Ramona, I dont have a favorite animal..I just enjoy what Kruger shows me…except for Elephants! What would I still like to see….so many things..and not enough time left! A caracal, serval, honey badger, close up kill, martial eagle next to me…too many to mention…but I wont complain, I had amazing sightings and would not change this experience for anything in the world! Philip, I wrote about the HB here in Satara yesterday, no, I have not seen it yet! Jonathan aka geraas, thanks for the recipe, I have not made that before, but will definately try it out before I leave! Camille, I dont know where the leopards and lions are, but with you going to LSabie for 4 days, you are bound to find them somewhere along the way…just so many of them around…please let me know if you did!
With that the end of the comments…with the excitement of the lions chasing the buffs, norms coming around for a beer or two..and Marty bringing around a Kurrichane Quale they found at the ablutions, I must get on with it….many pics from this pm of the birds I would like to show you…but not now..will upload them tomorrow and include it in my blog!
It was raining all the way through the night and evan when I woke up at 4am it was still raining…so again, I pulled the blanket over me and went back to sleep! Woke at 5:30 and just lay in bed listening to the rain! I eventually left camp at 6:30 really not sure that I was going to see anything in the rain. How wrong can you be! First up, outside the webcam this very wet Martial Eagle sitting in a dead tree…really like these trees, they so much tell a story…or think the could have if they were still alive! Not great lighting…and still raining cats and dogs…but still a Martial Eagle.

Today I wanted to drive the S100, then the S41 to Gudzani dam and back on the S90…but, as the story of my life goes so far…I never got there! 10km onto the S100 with only a few waterbuck and Zebra around….a few cars parked on the side of the road…a kill in a tree…really very difficult to see..it turned out to be a baby blue wildebeest…I was told that a leopard just climbed down and was somewhere on the ground…then someone else told me it was a Leopard with a young one! Wow, 2 leopards again..wished I could see them!
While sitting there waiting for any movement..the young couple next to me started talking…Wesley and Lizelle (I think) from Heidelberg…thanks for reading the blog and following my dream….then the guy next to me Gerhard, who also reads the blog! We got a movement in the bush…and the grass is so long you can hardly see anything…but, it popped up its head..and this the first pic I got! (Hope you not tired of seeing Leopards yet, and must enjoy it while Im seeing them….one of these days…I wont…and then you cant blame me for not showing them to you!)

I only had a small gap to see it…but ppl to the right told me they could see the mother as well! I got a glimpse of it walking off into the long grass and that was it! Waited for another hour before we got another glimpse of them…really to bushy to take any pics..and as said to many ppl before, some sightings I just have to sit there and enjoy and cant bring you the pics! Then after another hour or so….it popped its head out right under the tree where the kill was!

Gerhard could see the other one lying behind the tree..and it really looked like this one wanted to climb up to the kill…then a family of 4 idiots out of their VW bus spoiled it for all again! Gerhard shouted at them to get back into their car…but they did not listen…so he took their pic…a long story again…but I called Gordon the camp manager and he sent Mobi the traffic officer…he looked at the pics, took the registration number and went looking for them…certainly hope he found them to give them a stiff fine…no need to be rude and showing signs to ppl who are there to enjoy a sighting! Thanks to Gordon (camp manager at Satara) for the speedy reaction! With that leopards slinked off into the bush again! While we waiting again, I noticed this tree behind us..as said, really like looking at them, dead or not!

Another hour or so later, Jackie from Cape Town arrived..thank you too for reading the blog!…I was still talking to them and explaining to another guy to keep a look out as the leopards were on the ground somewhere..when once again I spoke too much! The next minute the leopard was in the tree…I missed it climbing up! But, got some nice pics of it in the tree….the first one of it looking down at us!

he/she ate a bit of the kill and think was a bit bored with all of us looking up…or maybe just wanted to show us how vicious it could be and gave me a nice yawn!

It must have been very bored with our company as then it climbed down the tree on the other side, could not get a pic….and dissapeared from view….with that I really needed the loo…..sat there for almost 5hrs, got the shots, but it was time to return…(spoke to many ppl today and they saw both the mother and the teenager in that tree)….on the way back…another car…wow, how they screamed and shouted when they saw it was me…Ian from Jhb and fam…nice to meet you too…hope you also got to see the leopards today!
On the way back to camp a few Elephants..me busy typing an sms to Engel, when this Elephant trumpeted, I looked up and it was right next to me! Luckily did not see it earlier or I would have frozen on the spot! The only other sighting this little Giraffe…

Returned to camp and had some lunch..then lay down to read my book..the wind started blowing..and how it blew…I had to try and fix the awning again! Really need to get it to the shop at Hoedspruit to have it repaired, hope it last that long!
I got up just after 4pm…had to do my dishes etc from last night..and then norms came around with a collegue…Martie….wow, she knows her birds…she has to date over 600 on her list..its great to sit outside camp with a person who knows the birds, like I did outside Punda Maria with Su Marie….I took pics of cut throat finches…and she showed me the swifts..and told me how to look for them! Thank you for coming around and showing this to me! Then it was time to make my fire..tonight I had fish, was going to make chips, but as the wind was howling so much did nto know if my pot would be ok on the fire…so I made baby garlic and parsley potatoes in the microwave…..supper done, must say I enjoyed it …and norms came for a last drink…then Marty came around, he found a Kurrichane button quial at the ablution…I got some pics of me holding it…wow, great to have such a special bird in your hand..will show you tomorrow….
With that I have come to another end of another day! A great day again…and dont know what tomorrow holds…but whatever it is…I look forward to another day in Kruger!
Until tomorrow
Sleep tite

Hi Martie,
Thanks again for lighting up our evenings (late nights) and for the stunning great pic’s ! So glad you are as crazy as we are – to sit at a sighting for 5 hours! Isn’t it amazing how the time flies, and one hardly notices how the time has gone, when you’re at such a great sighting! It rained here in JHB all night and VERY hard early this morning. Look forward to your news on Gudzani dam and the birdhide … hope they are nice and full. Have you perhaps asked Gordon or any of the Rangers why Ngotso dam is still so dry, even though that area has apparently had such good rains ?
Sweet dreams and hope you have wonderful day tomorrow !
God bless !

So good to hear from you Martie. Here in Uk we are in the middle of the coldest winter for 30 years with more to come! Up to 40 cm of snow forecast for my area tonight, and it has been below freezing every day almost since the week before Christmas. So your blog brings welcome warmth to our chilly hearts here in Uk, and the animals seem even more exotic when it is so cold outside ( -5 tonight). We cheered ourselves up by booking our flightds for south africa last night…………….only 8 months till August.
Keep showing us your marvellous sightings, you cant imagine how much we appreciate them.

Good morning Martie

The Martial is also a very special bird…
Did you manage to get a pic of your “mascot” with the beer in hand?
Only 9 more sleeps to go and we arrive…. Hope to see you again…
Have an awesome day

Hi Martie
I took the week off between Christmas and New Year and only got back to work on Monday and have only just caught up on the blog this morning. You know how it is when you have been away for a couple of days no time for anything else except catching up on the work. I know it is 6 days into the new year but I would like to wish you all the best for 2010 and hope the rest of your stay in KNP will be just as lovely as the past months have been. You counting the days that you still have left and I am counting the days to the 9th May when we arrive at the park just cant wait.
Your photo’s are great as usual.
One thing I would like to ask where about is the Satara webcam, can one see it from the tar road or do you have to take one of the dirt roads to see it. I always have them open on my computer while I am at work and when we have been at the park I have looked for them both the Orpen one and Satara one but because we are not sure where they are we do not know if we have seen them.
Enjoy your day and I hope you have nice weather today cool and overcast but not raining the rain can come in the evenings. It is actually cold here in Jhb this morning but I don’t mind the cold. We have also had a lot of rain everyday.
God Bless
Regards
Dawn (Johannesburg)

Hi Engel. Once again super sighting and brilliant photos of Leopard. The yawning one has such beautifull teeth I wonder what . toothpaste it uses…. Probably called IMPALA Brand. Thank heavens for the rainy weather Definitely better than the heat you had before. Hope you have an awesome sightings day. Luv u XXX

Dear Martie,
I am so grateful for your love of Kruger and the bush and your patience! To sit 5 hours at one spot but then get and publish the most wonderful and intimate of photos of God’s marvellous creation – leopards! Thank you!
I am also very nervous of elephants. I felt almost neurotic after 18 days in Kruger because I was eventually watching for elephants to be behind the next big bush! They do just suddenly appear next to you and they are so capable of trashing one’s car. I saw my first Kurrichane Quail near Satara last week.
Really appreciate you
Warm regards,
Joyful

Morning Martie, yet another wonderful day in paradise, love the ME as for the leopards what can one say!!!!!! the one that is “visiting the dentist” is superb. I cannot believe that people get out of their cars, I get goose bumps just thinking about it, sooooo dangerous. As for dead trees there is something quite eerie and fascinating about them, more so if there is a raptor on them. Hope you have a super day today. Regards Chrissie.

Hi Martie
Unreal how the weather changes from one day to the next after being sooooo HOT, and wow what another great day nevertheless.

Hi Martie, stunning pics of the leopard, so cute. Glad the camp manager sent someone to sort out those idiots. Hope they got a fat fine…. Pity people aren’t reported more often…. Have had plenty rain in JHB. Good luck tom. Take care Bev

Hi Martie
Another very special day for you with the leopard, specially in that long grass. We here in Gauteng also has lovely rain. We haven’t seen the sun since 1st January. Glad about the rain in Kruger!!
Enjoy your day

Hi Martie, I visited Satara over the festive period and was lucky enough to spot LoG hidden in dense bushes. You are very fortunate to see so many leopards. Enjoy the time en keep on posting. Regards , Gert

Good Morning Martie,
Where are the Lions ???? Only kidding – thank you for such stunning pictures of the Leopards – I liked the one showing its tonsils !! GW I chuckled at your comment about the toothpaste it uses, I had a good chuckle when I read that. I know why you see so many Leopards Martie, besides having an eye for the bush, it is your patience that rewards you – who else sits for 5 hours, with a bursting bladder, at one sighting? I do hope the cop found the idiots and gave them a heavy fine.
I didn’t get the picture of the elephant when you were sending your SMS – what happened to it – trumpeting right next to you ?
I also liked the pictures of the dead trees, especially the one with a Martial Eagle in it. Wonderful if you namesake can help you find more birds.
Glad to read that it is cooler – the same here in Rustenburg. I hope that your awning lasts until you can get to town for repairs but with so many wonderful sightings like you are having there is no time for that !
January 6th, 2010 at 7:56 am
A hearty good morning to you Martie! Well we are back from the coast, had a lovely time visiting with my sister and her SO! Bought the Vroue Keur on our way to St Lucia and really enjoyed reading your story, so nice to feel that I am “actually part of reading your blog”! Even my sister read it! Well Happy New Year to you! Lovely sightings over the week that I was gone! Like always the S100 has delivered! Hope you see a kill tonight next to the fence, we saw that about 5years ago at Satara when Luan was just 3years old! My mother had such a fright she put her suitcase and everyting she could find infront of the tents door! Well we are enjoying lovely cool weather here in Pretoria after temperatures which reached up to 50 degrees in Mtubatuba on the 26th and New Years day! Hope you have a good day and the school holidays end soon, so no more traffic rush!

It seems the rain is almover the country, its raining here by us in Randfontein as well. It just show that mother nature is more advanced than us. If you have patience she will reward you. Not all ways with what you want. When we were in satara the HB was between the bungalows the whole time kicking over the dustbins, he got a surprize with ours, we have a 15 old baby and all her dirty dippers was in the bin, our bin was the only one standing.
January 6th, 2010 at 8:37 am
More Martie!
So glad to see the leopard magic is still working well for you. Sorry we did not leave any comments the last few weeks but we were on a bit of leave ourselfs. Boy, did we have some catching up to do when we came back. It’s a bit late but happy new year non the less, for you and all your loved ones, and may the 85 od days thats still left for you in Kruger be the best you can have, you never know, maybe Mother Nature is saving the best for last…
Lots of regards,

Hi Martie
Stunning pics of leopards!!You must really make a coffee-table book of your year with the leopards of KNP.
I would love to get a diary of your dream.
You are a living legend to your supporters.

January 6th, 2010 at 8:49 am
O Ja,
I still wanted to tell you, we will be going to Satara and LS as well in April, counting of the days, just like Ilse. Still so sad that we will be missing you with a few days…
We really would have loved to meet you in person. Did read the article about you in Vrouekeur over the weekend, nice photo of you with the binoculars!!
But what I’m really chuffed about is to see the leopards is still around that area. We would have expexted to have a better chance of seeing them down south at LS or B&D. So if you see him again, please ask him to stick around till then? Fat chance ne, but you never know if you dont try….?

Wonderful pictures. Can not wait to read your blog. Thank you for all the effort you put in for us. I dream of the day that I can spend months in the Park”Wow!!!
January 6th, 2010 at 9:22 am
I just do not understand the concept that ppl are either just ignorant of the laws or just plainly acting like well humans I suppose. When you enter any park you get a set of the rules..why do they always try and push the boundaries.
Nice yawning pick LLL.
January 6th, 2010 at 9:38 am
Just want to say thanks for the lovely pics and for getting the idiots walking around in the Park a fine. Hopefully they will think next time before they get out of their vehicle in any Park
Can’t wait to get to work everyday to read your blog, thanks for sharing with us who would give all our teeth to be in your position!
Have a great day!!!!
January 6th, 2010 at 9:53 am
Morning Martie
WHEW —-your leopard shots are really amazing!!!! Interested to hear if you have spent any time at Gudzani East——it is one of our favorites —but you seem to be “held up ” before you get far from camp! Sure youare having another great day .
Greetings from a very, very dry Plett.
January 6th, 2010 at 9:54 am
WOW Martie! Kruger never ceases to surprise – such fantastic sightings in rainy weather! Amazingf photos.
January 6th, 2010 at 10:29 am
Hi Martie, Got back from our holiday yesterday and put the unpacking on hold so that we could catch up with all your stories and news! Thanks again for your efforts and for a great read. Kruger stories are a lot more interesting than doing the laundry! Glad to hear that you had such a special Christmas Day. Wow. The days you still have left are plenty … an eternity for most “normal” holiday-makers! Don’t start counting down yet … loads to see, do and experience. All the best for 2010; hope it’s going to be a great and memorable year! Meanwhile, for us “normal” ones, its 84 sleeps until we get our 10 days in the Park. Can’t wait for our annual fix. Cheers, and have a good day!
i♥kruger and kids (i.e. from my kids too!)
p.s. have an odd question for you … do you ever tire of using the ablution blocks?! Don’t think I could do the communal thing for as long as you have. Well done!
January 6th, 2010 at 10:44 am
Enjoy your time in the bush.

howdy neighbour
second time lucky (lost my 04h00 comment this am =( )
as usual your positioning and patience at the sighting LIT were SPOT ON!- your pics rock!!!
we were lucky to see a leopard on the carcass (not sure if it’s the same one as it appeared to be a large-ish male?? from 14h30 till just before 15h00 (after having stared at the upside down wildeweest calf since 11h30). By the time it had climbed down there was very little of the back half remaining and unfortunately our pics don’t even compare to yours!!
Besides getting a huge fine and removed from the park, I hope the law breakers get EDUCATED! They are setting such a bad example to new comers and foreigners who also start thinking it’s ok to get out. It’s a pity I wasn’t around to confront them to try and educate them. It is wrong for so many reasons..-
1. the poor leopard was disturbed/scared away while trying to eat her and her cub’s HARD EARNED LUNCH, there is always the risk, the longer she’s not eating that another animal will come and rob her of her prize, putting her cub’s future at risk.
2. they deprived 15 patient vehicles of a once in a lifetime sighting.
3. They have placed their own family’s lives at risk by being outside of the vehicle at a dangerous animal sighting.
4. If they were attacked the leopard’s future is jeapordised as they have created a “problem animal” who SanParks will then have to kill.
I wish you had been with us on Monday when we experienced a juv. martial eagle executing 4-5 swooping attacks targeting newborn impalas from a herd of +/- 100 drinking in the Shingwedzi River, only 500m from the camp gate. The adrenaline was really pumping but the impala were lucky that day.
Brenda noticed the poor Kurricane Buttonquail on the bench in the corner flapping up against the wall like a bee on a window pane. I released it into the long grass at the fence and it wasn’t there this am so it hopefully avoided Satara’s famous snakes.
Good luck for today, looking forward to tomorrow nights dinner on your special day!

Hi Martie
What wonderful pics of the leopard, not used to seeing such greenery in Kruger as we always go up during the winter. You are just one lucky person being able to live your dream in Kruger. Enjoy everyday to the full and for us only 191 days left before our next Kruger visit.
Thanks for the blog I enjoy every bit of it.

Hi Martie
We are now at Satara and also saw the tree with baby wildebeest in it late yesterday afternoon. We parked for an hour and saw the mom and cub pop their heads up every now and then but the did not climb into the tree. I can’t believe how many people got out of their cars and disturbed the sighting for everybody.
We are leaving Satara tomorrow morning. I thought I might try to find you at your camp but time runs away with me!!

Hallo Martie
that is one day on the right side and the following day on the left side. That is more or less half a kilometre before the turn-off to the road to Nwanedzi (H6) – next to the river. We saw them on the H7 and the S100. I do not know if they are still there, but we saw wild dogs (might be 24) just before the Shimangwaneni Dam. Enjoy your time in Satara – for me still one of the best places to be!
You have a great memory. I did not think you would remember that you reversed back to us. I took my hat off for you – to remember so many people and with so much detail! You will see a lot of Leopards and cheetah around Satara. Ons was verstom in Oktober – ons het basies elke dag een van die twee gesien. You must have seen the circus leopard

Hi Martie
Is it your B’day tomorrow?
Glad to see Satara is still treating you well- 2nd time around! It seems to me that you don’t even have to leave camp to see/hear a kill! So exciting and scary!

Hi Martie
Loved your pics of the leopard, somehow this one seems to have bigger eyes? Love the way his ears are down like domestic cats do when they are hunting.
Your blog is a wonderful way to start the day

Hi Martie,
Wow! Leopards again! I must just follow you if I want to see leopards. In 23 years of going to KNP we’ve only seen leopards 3 times – all 3 sightings since 2006! Have a wonderful day.
Regards
Louis

Hi Martie,
Feel for u concerning the goggas. Have tried insect repellent candles, body sprays, creams, yellow lights. insect catchers, the works & have not found anything that is really effective. It’s maar part of being in the bush!
I wonder if there is another individual who has sighted as many leopards in the same space of time??
I admire yr perseverence when it comes to keeping the blog going against the odds you often encounter; keep it up, we enjoy it!
Cheers & God bless!
