Its a very wet good evening to you all from Satara tonight…I had to wait for the storm to pass before I could post this blog!
First to the comments, as usual…Green Widow…I was so put off by those bugs last night that I did not want to eat..only had a spoon full or so..and then went to bed..still trying to get them out of my hair and ears! Really not a nice experience! Glen Dbn…no ways Im walking around at night looking for a honey badger…know that is around the bungalows…but have not shown itself to me here in the camping area…not in Augutst and not now…think it knows that the ppl around here just have normal meals…and maybe it prefers the cuisine meals from the bungalows! Lala Gilfallan, I have heard the story about the leopard that was shot at Tambotie…really a sad story…cant believe you did not hear the shot at night….and as I was told…all because of ppl not listening and went looking for it….wont get into that one…really sad..and I hope and understand it was not the usual leopard seen around camp…maybe a young one, but then I dont know! Glad to hear there is another “sout van die aarde man: (Salt of the earth man), one you can really rely on…and hope you appreciate him as much as I do mine! Ilse dont worry, I have missed meeting many ppl by walking to the ablutions…really no sweat, but would have like to have met you..sometimes I just dissapear into the night, like you said…I have to blog…and I sometimes…excuse the punt…but would liike to get on with it…and go to sleep.ppl dont always realize how tiring a day can be…looking for sightings…hour after hour…..and then get back, do the pics….make my fire, decide what to cook…..etc….Fathima, it might look adorable, but I can assure you its not…the minute you try to cuddle it….It will Eat you Up! Ria, how priviledge you were to see the day or day after Alexander died…I really looked for him in April last year, but could not find him! Really sad about that, but then I got to see Hlanganini and now he is dead as well…just like we will all die…and maybe ppl look for us…maybe we die alone..whatever the case…I hope that all that goes that way at least had a life full of exitement and joy….sorrow…we will not talk about to night..but part of life! Safari Gal and Jungle Junkie, I did not go and ask at reception about the webcam wh…but called and was told that a pipe broke to feed water to it…and they are busy fixing it! Ihope that soon you will see a lot more buffs, Zebra, Impala Blue wildebeest with young ones around the WH! Romana, the books I raed from Tony Park you can get at any book shop..really interesting reading..not just about poaching…but Kruger and surroundings in general! Check Kalahari.net…maybe you will find it there! To the first part of your comment….maybe one day ppl wil understand that Kruger is not just about the Big 5, but the silence…the sunrise, the sunset…and most of all just the scenary! Erika Oosthuizen,, glad you enjoyed the article in the Vrouekeur…sorry but I cant remember who I met where…but if you can give me a clue…Im sure I will remember..sorry I feel real bad when I cant remember the ppl…makes me feel so inadequate!!! Monika, who knwos what is in store ..a book….maybe!
Lets get on with tonight..or rather today! I woke up late again…but knew I had to go to town, and as you know, I hate it…really cant stand all the hussle and buzzlle around me….know I have to get use to it again, so I took it real slow!
Not even 100m out of the gate…a speed trap…really not sure why they would put it up here…no one speeding coming out of the gate looking at all the animals at the WHole….rather put it up after Nsemani dam and then they can make some money!!! Had to turn right to Orpen istead of left on the S100, which I cant wait to drive again, but then…a few 100 metres from the turn off a few cars parked on the side of the road…I have learned not to ignore these cars…have missed many sightings because I did…so today, I drove up to them…and what did I see? Apart from Elephants and Buffs close to camp….here a LIT! Only 5 minutes drive from camp and already 3 of the big 5…not a great sighting close to the road, but Im not complaining!
I could not wait too long as I had a 115km drive to town…and then back the same distance! Had to wait to at least see some movement…and not long after the LIT gave me a nice pic!
I turned the car around and took the road towards Orpen…lots of Buffs, Elephants and the usual Impala, Zebra, Blue Widllebeest etc…I had some time and decided to turn off the S36 to see what was happening at the lion kill..maybe I shoudl have not! Only 3 cars there, but all out of the windows, cars, sunroofs, and even walking on the road!!!! I took pics of all of them…and stopped to speak to them..they all knew it was not allowed to be out…but they did it anyway!!!! I dont think after I have been here so long..and have seen so many things….its even worth reporting it! Too many times Im told….”What can we do about it”!
The only other worthwhile sighting I had was of these White Faced Ducks giving me a show…
Not much further on…and I reached the gate, got a re entry permit and was on my way…….again did not realize it was that long way to go;…..got to Hoedspruit and have seen before that they have a camping shop…now Im ready to get stocked up for my 3 weeks at Balule..no electricity…and the hottest time of the year…I bought a Hammock! Really think I will need it there with no aircon or fan around!
Then onto the Spar, maybe today I chose the wrong day to do shopping…after the New Years weekend…not much vegs in either of the shops…I got a pack of “potjie” mix, some spinach, potatoes and onions and that was it! Stopped at the Tops…Liquor store and stocked up on beers…then to the garage for wood and the Steers for a burger…all in the same place…and on my way back! Not even 10km out of town..a storm was building…and I love them…not much thunder, but the lightning was good..and a few drops, just enough to wet the slug!
The storm did not last long..and before I knew it I was at Orpen Gate….very hot…and I could not believe that an hour ago I was cold because fo the rain! Sightings on the way was very slow…think the heat got to the animals, but the clouds were building behind me and I was hoping for a good storm on the way! The only sighting I did stop for on the way back was this Fish Eagle at Nsemani Dam.
Just after I got back to camp, my twin…Marty came around…wow, what nice ppl…they are camping and could not set up camp in the rain and thunder…so, we had a good chat…and must say! I really enjoyed their company, but more so..their son…Luke, you are a star..and really helped me a lot tonight! I tried to hit the stand of the umbrella into the ground..but its very hard..I left the bottom piece stuck into the ground at either CBridge or LSabie, dont know…he was very clever and told me to put a peg in and just position the umbrella over that! Maybe you all dont understand how I appreciate the help I get from the little ones….their minds are a lot more active and creative than mine! Really nice to meet you Marty and fam! What a pleasure!
Now the storm is gone…the wind is still blowing and at least I could have the left over meal from last night without any bugs!
