Media Release: Skukuza Marathon books out whole camp

Date: 2013-09-02

South African National Parks (SANParks) would like to inform the public that the Skukuza camp will be booked out for the annual Skukuza Half Marathon 2014 runners on 1 and 2 August 2014. This announcement comes ahead of August 2014 bookings opening on Monday, 2 September 2013.

Since it was first initiated in 1988, the Skukuza Half Marathon has been one of the most sought after marathons for runners in South Africa.

In order to better manage the event SANParks has made a decision to hold all accommodation for marathon participants and their families. This means that when August 2014 accommodation reservations open at 07.30 on Monday 2 September, visitors will be unable to reserve accommodation/ camping in Skukuza for the nights of 1 and 2 August 2014. All other camps will be open for reservations for visitors over that weekend.

“In the SANParks Responsible Tourism Strategy, one of the key aspects that’s been identified by our visitors for improvement, is that of enhanced visitor management. Better management of this event and the limitation of impact and experience on other visitors during the event, is one such intervention,” said Glenn Phillips Managing Executive: Tourism Development and Marketing”

Marathon participants are advised to book accommodation/ camping through the Skukuza Marathon Club event coordinator, Mpumalanga Events at: dot@mpu.co.za, or call 082 447 1570.
