Namaqua National Park flower report
Back to all news
Date: 14th August 2012
The flowers at Skilpad are quite stunning. It seems to be better than previous years, and visitors will really be missing something if they give Skilpad a skip.
At this stage it looks like the flowers may last for quite some time, based on the countless young plants that still need to flower and the predicted rain.
The orange daisies (Ursinia cakifolia) have made bright orange carpets. Other species include Arctotis sp, Felicia australis and the ‘Dassie gousblom’. More colours include the Varkiesknol (Conicosia elongata), Pietsnot (Grielum homifusum), Meidestert (Lapeirosia sp.) and various vygie (succulent) species. The cattails (Bulbinella latifolia) are looking good as well.
The Caracal Ecoroute from Skilpad to Kookfontein is beautiful, particularly for vygies, but also for various other species. Please note that you will need a 4x4 for this specific trail.
The coastal vygies and other flowers between the Groen river and Spoeg river are also coming along very nicely (strictly for 4x4 vehicles
Areas further afield, close to the park:
Just past Spoegrivier is worth the drive. The Grootvlei pass to Hondeklip Bay via Soebatsfontein is also rewarding.
