A woman tourist, Sandra Malan was injured when she fell off the suspension bridge at Tsitsikamma National Park near Plettenberg Bay on Wednesday afternoon.
Reports say that she was sitting on the concrete base support structure of the suspension bridge on the eastern side of the river. She stood up to watch her husband take pictures of their children, lost her footing and fell approximately 6-7 metres down the rock face.
Her husband called the park reception and requested help. A field ranger who was on patrol in the vicinity responded immediately, reaching the accident scene within minutes.
Park officials called in paramedics and a doctor from Plettenberg Bay to assess the extent of the injuries. The woman suffered a broken leg, sprained ankle, cuts and bruises on her jaw and legs. She was later airlifted by military helicopter and taken to Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth where she is receiving further treatment.
