Media release: Calling all Birders to Camdeboo Birding Weekend

Birders can enjoy exploring on foot and trips through less-visited areas of the Camdeboo National Park during the annual Birding Weekend from 23 to 25 March.
Birders can choose from three guided excursions on Saturday, each with its own unique appeal.
The Fonteinkloof excursion, in the Park’s rugged section, is only suitable for fit and agile birders, while the gentler Winterhoek excursion exposes birders to a relatively new area of the Park which is not usually open to visitors. Those with a special interest in wetland species can choose the Nqweba Dam excursion.
Alternatively, birders can follow their own course through the areas of the Park that are open to visitors via tourist roads and hiking trails, including the Valley of Desolation, Game Viewing Area, Eerstefontein Trail and Education Centre area.
The event kicks off with a cheese & wine and registration event on Friday evening 23 March. Those who cannot attend the Friday session can apply for late registration on Saturday morning from 05h00. A spitbraai function on Saturday evening will round off a full day of birding.
Birders can take advantage of the newly opened Nqweba Campsite to overnight inside the Park, nearby the Nqweba Dam, or can find accommodation in the town of Graaff-Reinet.
Camdeboo National Park is home to some 225 bird species. The Park’s bird database includes the vulnerable Ludwig’s Bustard and Blue Crane as well as the near-threatened Black Harrier.
