Addo Elephant National Park staff are mourning the tragic deaths of three of the Park’s marine rangers who were killed in a car accident near Alexandria early this morning.
The accident occurred shortly before 6.00 a.m. this morning, approximately 16km from Alexandria, when a truck veered off the lane it was travelling in and hit the land cruiser head-on in which the SANParks' marine rangers were travelling in.
The rangers, who died at the scene of the accident, were on their way to Port Alfred to launch the Park’s boat to go to Bird Island this morning.
The three young marine rangers were part of an elite anti-poaching team that have had numerous successes in preventing abalone poaching and in arresting abalone poachers. Their tragic loss, however, has not affected the marine team’s ability to continue with their anti-poaching initiatives.
The names of the deceased are John Mapheu (29), Bonga Skotsho (28) and Marvin Williams (25). Their families have been informed of this sad loss. Their tragic deaths are a devastating loss for their families and SANParks.
