Public Sighting of the Month: 2008

Our Public Sightings Gallery receives dozens of great pictures every month, and we've decided to introduce the "public sighting of the month" to acknowledge the excellent entries. Eric Reisinger, SANParks photographer and photo editor, selects the photo, which is displayed on our home page.

December

This is the winning image for December 2008. This picture was taken by Jacques de Villers from South Africa on the Biyamiti Loop in the Kruger National Park.

November

This is the winning image for November 2008. This Rock Monitor picture was taken by Mario Fazekas from South Africa in September 2008 at Orpen camp in the Kruger National Park.

October

This is the winning image for October 2008. This image was taken by Jared Nicholls from South Africa at Masorini in the Kruger National Park.

September

This is the winning image for September 2008, morning mist burnt off by the sun. This image was taken by Patrick Garvey from Ireland near Orpen gate in Kruger National Park.

August

This month we were faced with a tough decision in choosing the best image and selected two images as winners for August: The leopard in the tree was shot by Morgane Lamey from France and the excellent action shot of the the African Darter in flight was photographed by PR Winan from South Africa.

July

This is the winning image for July 2008, A leopard cub spotted in the Kruger by Zane de Beer from South Africa. The photo was taken on a small road between Skukuza and Satara on the 24th of March 2008.

June

The winning image for June 2008, A great action shot by Perry de Graaf from the Netherlands taken at the Gardenia hide on the 6th of April 2008.

May

Although both of these images are stunning and very different, We were hard pressed to select one winner and decided to select both images as winners for the month: The long exposure (Star Trails), photographed by Theo Odendaal and a nice action shot of an Elephant named "Alexander" having a dust bath by Aat Vuik.

April

This is the April winning image, a great moment in a crocodiles life captured by Peter Winnan at Sunset Dam Lower Sabie.

March

This fine action shot of a fish eagle is the March winner. It was taken by Peter Winnan at Sunset Dam, Lower Sabie.

February

This image of sable is the February winner. It's a good running shot of a rare sighting. It was taken by Mike Fisher (UK) near Mondzweni on the S36 in Kruger National Park.

January

This picture of fighting jackals is the January winner. It's an outstanding action shot and portrayed interesting behavior. It was taken by Geo Jooste, Bloemfontein.
