Media Release - 11 June 2004
School sports tournament launched by Coin and KNP
The Kruger National Park/Coin Africa Security High School Soccer and Netball Challenge was officially launched by Limpopo Premier Mr Sello Moloto, MECs from both Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces and the Executive Director of the Kruger National Park Dr Bandile Mkhize today (June 11, 2004).
Netball and soccer teams from 16 high schools from neighbouring communities around the Kruger National Park will take part in the tournament over the next two months.
Matches between the schools involved will take place at the relevant schools, starting on the 19th of June 2004. The finals will take place on August 14, 2004 at Skukuza.
“Most of us realise that teenagers today will become the leadership of tomorrow and therefore it is important for us to begin to spread the message of conservation to these young but active minds. It is these young people that this effort is aimed at. With this endeavour, it is hoped that the Kruger National Park will b remembered in these young minds as an organisation that supported them in their extra-mural activities whilst they were still at school,” said the Executive Director of the Kruger National Park, Dr Bandile Mkhize.
Winning teams from each of the schools will benefit not only from the R22 000 prize money donated by Coin Africa, but also received trophies and a computer per school. The school to win the soccer tournament will win R10 000 and the school that wins the netball tournament will take home R5 000.
“I would just like to congratulate the KNP management and its private sector partners like Coin Africa Security as I feel that the Kruger is now socialised and that it has linked the two provinces, Limpopo and Mpumalanga in one endeavour, which is also impressive,” said Limpopo Province Premier Mr Sello Moloto.
